SMS you can definitely use, for WAP/Web/IM you need the TCP stack in 4.0 and I'm trying to find a solution for my problem with this set up. You can't substitute a Blackberry Service (be it BES or BWC) with POP but you could use a POP client on your blackberry with the TCP stack without a BES or a BWC service. IF it works for you..
