A short term solution for you Amathur may be
TrekBuddy. It isn't the navigation you seek but with a bit of pre-planning and maps downloaded onto your MicroSD card from
Googlemaps 2 Trekbuddy then at least you will know where you are!
You'll have to do a bit of reading on the pages linked in the app names, but it isn't too hard to get working. I'm dense with computers and PDAs but was able to figure it out; best of all it's free.
