I use the RIM instant message programs (MSN Messenger, Google Talk, and Blackberry Messenger). For me, I've never had any real issues with them.

The only annoyance that I have with MSN Messenger is that it won't allow me rename/nickname my friends.

I've also used Kik & WhatsApp to chat with friends with either iPhones/Blackberries who have those programs. I've wanted to test pingChat but I haven't received a beta invitation.
