Here's a beware - if you are on the home screen and hit the menu button to see the list of apps, then you can't use speed dials. What you get are the home screen shortcuts.

Well, not exactly. If you press and
HOLD the Call button (green handset), you can type a name to retrieve an Address Book entry, but that's available on 4.1 firmware on devices with a Call button (like the 8700) too.
If you just quickly tap the Call button and type letters, you'll get the corresponding number as found on a standard telephone keypad.
Also, the response may differ depending on your Dial From Home Screen setting (Phone --> Options --> General Options), but I'm not sure. I have it turned off (No).
