Trials and Tribulations of 4.5.0.37 on an 8320
Please Login to Remove!
Actually, this post's title should better read joys and tribulations, as just about everything works fine on my 8320 running 4.5.0.37 except wi-fi access, which was no surprise as this is discussed elsewhere. Previously, I installed 4.5.0.10 and wi-fi/UMA worked just fine.
What is there to love in 4.5.0.xx? Let me count the ways:
(1) Video recording, wow! Works well except for poor sound pickup, since the mic is pointed the wrong way. I hope some inventive soul will come up with a mini directional stick mic to pop in and point the right way. Or maybe I'll kludge something together myself.
(2) Video clips can be sent as email attachments, probably up to a max size of 10 MB. Curiously, video attachments to incoming email cannot be opened, as was indeed previously the case. Why that, RIM?
(3) Browser video, eg YouTube, is starting to work. On the edge network, video is extremely choppy, no big surprise here. When wi-fi was working with 4.5.0.10, strangely browser video was inop.
(4) New font handling is an outstanding improvement. I have the default set to BBAlpha Sans 8 pt, looks great.
(5) The new email interface has been cleaned up, very nice. Likewise the address book.
(6) Two DataViz Documents to Go products were installed, Word to Go and something called Slideshow to Go, both standard edition. I haven't had a chance to play around with these as yet.
(7) WorldMate Live now works, could never get it functional before.

This is all pretty much old news, but thanks for the info.
4.5.0.37 works for everyone except TMo users where most of the time UMA doesn't work.

My UMA worked, but it fried 2 sim cards. I went back to 4.5.2 What I miss? L theme, cleaner e-mail, and MUCH better web browsing. The rest I'm OK with.

Another incidental feature: If you need a flashlight in a pinch, set the video light option to on, it's quite bright.

For those reverting due to issues....I recommend the 4.2.2.184 version that is in the sticky in the 8300 forum. It's less buggy than the TMo released .180 version. I load the .184 on all new 8320's I hand out to my folks.

Yes, I guess I mistyped. I dropped down to whatever T-mobile has as the latest on their site. There's a 2 in it somewhere. I just figured if I fry another card I better be running the official OS.
As to fried, I was getting "SIM card not allowed" at the top of my screen and either a red X or a red SOS only as the signal strength indicator. I called T-Mobile, they diagnosed it over the phone as my needing a new Sim card. Second time I did not bother with having it diagnosed. I did try to call to prearrange a free exchange, but ended up just going in to the store, and they agreed it was dead.

I had problems with .184 such as it restarting while tethering. .180 has been most stable for me so far..

Hmmm....don't remember having that issue but it's been quite some time since I've used .184 myself.

But .184 is what you would 'recommend', correct?

Hey All!
Glad to see such participation/collaboration!
I am very well pleased with the added functionality I am seeing in the betas, and am optimistic that we are going to see a production version as soon as the VARS can upgrade hosting servers. There doesn't seem to be a really good opening here with holidays quickly approaching, and new models releases on the horizon, but I'm sure that's why I'm paying them the big bucks! LOL
I have experienced a few memory issues with the video in .18 and .37, as in apparently a defaulting limit to the video length or size.
Memory leaking seem to be directly dependent on application use, and I lowered my retention period for messages and email. I have matered the num+L Shift+delete to POS my device instead of the battery pull.
Overall battery life seems to be down, and I am using the extended life battery, but again, probably addressed with the newer hardware on the horizon. A trade off - more functionality, shorter battery life - hey! upgrade the hardware!! Duh!!
Lastly, I would just like to see one more interim beta, in which uma works for the Tmo 8320 users, and I have started using the 4.5 Desktop Manager beta as well, without incident (or noticeable benefit).

Yes Cal, I would like to see a more stable beta for Tmo 8320 users. I have tried all of the combinations and i dont mind not having video and youtube and am going to the .184 rev.
I'll keep trying until i find one that i like, thats why we're all here anyways, right?

On my T-mobile 8320, the max size of a video email attachment is 3 MB, and that has been the case on each beta version of OS 4.5 I've tried (.10, .18, and .37). I don't know (but would like to know) whether this is a beta limitation or will be in effect in the official release. It seems odd, since there is not a 3 MB limit for still photo attachments.
