Hello:

Been lurking here until the Cingular Pearl finally become a reality. I am now considering switching to Cing. Pearl from Cing Smartphone (Audiovox SMT5600), and I have not had much luck trying to learn if I will will be able to duplicate certain functionality that I have (via 3rd prty apps) on my current Smartphone, specifically:

1) I use a product called "Pocket Controller" (soti.net) which lets me plug my phone into my work Notebook and the application puts a "functional picture" of my SMT5600 on my desktop and allows me to control the phone by clicking on the pictured phones buttons and enter text into the phone using my computer's full sized keyborad. This makes interacting with the phone a snap at work. Does anyone make an application that does this same thing but with a Pearl?

2) There is an application called Goosync (goosync.com) which let's me sync my SMT5600 with Google Calendar directly, without using Outlook or ActiveSync. Is there an equivalent application for Pearl?

3) Once I make the switch, how will I be able to synch all my Outlook Contacts (kept on my home PC - works fine with SMT5600) on my Pearl which will be wanting to be synched with Lotus Notes at work?

My company is a Lotus notes Company and has never supported any synching of my Audiovox with Notes, and that is OK. The company does support Blackberry and has been bugging me to go with a BB, but I don't want the bulk of every BB device prior to the Pearl. With the Pearl, I will finally get E-mail in my phone and support for Cardscan (which my company would not support with the Smartphone). I do not use the Lotus Calendar.

I would be most appreciative of any advice on these issues which you BB jocks can offer this BB novice.

Umm, seriously not intending to be a wise-a**, but I since no response:has anyone switched from Smartphone to Blackberry?

I have an application (Mac here, but there's gotta be a Windoze equivalent) that does the remote-control of the phone. I can dial, send/receive SMS, and the like through my Mac laptop via Bluetooth on my 8100 just fine.

Re: Google, I think that there *might* be a Calendar tool for the 8100 that works. Use the "Search" function at the top for "Google Calendar," perhaps?

Re: Outlook contacts, if the Blackberry syncs with my Apple Address Book, I don't think you have anything to worry about w/ Outlook. (It's a supported configuration - you won't have any problems getting it to work!)

My 8100 has been *the* most usable personal information manager I've used to date. It's even better that I don't have to hold a brick to my head to talk on the phone.

What program are you using to see sms on the mac
