Selling it for $299.00 and something tells me they will make a profit.

Wirelessly posted (troydbrown is Chad!)

Yes they will on the service plan. They are in business to make money.

I remember reading that ATT pays Apple that amount for an iPhone. I think they owe Apple $200 for every one they sell and they have to pay it upfront. They said it'll make their bottom line look bad this year. RIM's no different evidently.

Well, they are losing so much money on the iphone that it is affecting their bottom line. Why do you think this will be different? They certainly won't sell as many of these.

I would also question the validity of that link. If other vendors are giving them away free, or $99 or even $199 it would seem unlikely that they could afford it and ATT is getting screwed. I doubt they are getting a better deal on them from RIM then ATT is.

Where is the profit in that? You are forgetting the 50,000 or so employees they have to pay, their building costs, their energy costs, fuel, infrastructure and on and on and on....that $30 becomes nearly nothing. They just can't afford to lose money on another phone.

My understanding of the deal is that not only do they pay Apple for the equipment but Apple also gets a slice of the monthly revenue from wireless accounts.

I assume you are just stating the oblivious and not actually thinking that we did not know that...
