Default New user with some questions...

Hello,

Just got my first blackberry today, a 8900 Curve in fact, just trying to fathom is out but come a bit short...

At the moment my phone is displaying GPRS with a mast symbol and 3 bars, with wifi symbol, slightly faded, underneath (I am connected to my home router). If possible I would to do as much as possible through WiFi when connected so as to save my 500mb mobile internet I get a month. I have switched my browser setting to hotspot, does this mean when using the browser I am using my home WiFi? My question is, is there anyway of setting it so it uses WiFi as much as possible if connected, but if not automatically uses the mobile internet?

Also, do applications such as Facebook, Windows Messenger use Wi-Fi or do they use GPRS?

Am I correct in assuming that email pushing can not be done by WiFi?

One more thing, when looking WiFi diagnostics it has a red cross next to connected under Blackberry Infrastructure heading. Am I right in saying this is the cause of my faded WiFi symbol? Does anyone know the cause/solution to this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have a BB data plan? You need that for the apps to work.

Yes I do (I think). I get 500mb of data per month through Orange. That aspect works, I sent an email using my BB and I recieved that email on laptop, it says at bottom "Email sent using Blackberry Orange". It more the question of how do I get them to use WiFi rather than the mobile internet in order to save money/be faster.

Bump, can't still get it use WiFi instead of mobile internet even though it is connected to the WiFi. Also can't seem to get it to connect to Blackberry infrastructure (it has a faint grey WiFi logo in top right corner instead of a solid one).

Any help would be great!

Go into Manage Connections -> Services Status and see what is says under BlackBerry Internet Service and Wi-Fi Network when you are connected to your router, and when not.

Also go into Manage Connections -> Wi-Fi Options then press the menu button and select Wi-Fi Tools ->Wi-Fi Diagnostics. Look under BlackBerry Infrastructure.
You should get something like:
BlackBerry Infrastructure
Address Used: //204.187.87.88:443
IP Used: 204.187.87.88:443;49512
Connecting: Successful
Authenticating router: Successful
Authenticating server: Successful
Last Contact At: Apr 14, 2009 10:25 PM

If you have a properly operating BlackBerry Data plan, it will behave exactly as you wish, routing all your blackberry data through a Wi-Fi router it can access, to the Rim Operations Centre for browsing, email and other apps.

Please do not post your question in someone else's thread. It's very bad netiquette. Start your own thread for your own question please.

There seems to be something wrong with Orange support of Wi-Fi. You are at least the third person on Orange to post with this problem in the last couple of days.
