What's the deal with the 8100's lighting, it seems like it sometimes when using it the screen/keyboard/trackball will be lit up bright, othertimes the screen is at 1/2 brightness and no trackball/keyboard lighting even when typing. Anyone know how the thing works?

It's the automatic dim feature. That's just the way it is. It senses the ambient light and adjusts accordingly. The sensor is in the window with the LED.

This topic has been discussed to death here. Search for "auto dim" and similar words and you'll see what I mean. That feature (the ability to turn off auto-dim) was removed from the OS on all versions after .42, which was the initial release of the OS. Sorry, all you can do is downgrade to 4.2.0.42. Some have done that but it's not recommended as there are many bug fixes in the later releases that don't make downgrading worth it-IMHO.
