Anyone know if this is an option, or 3rd party avail for T9/predictive text on the phone? Would make texting so much easier on the phone....wouldnt it? or am i just used to having it on other phones?

Nope, not an option. No predictive text, just AutoText. (options > AutoText) You can edit and insert commonly typed information.

The only thing that is ever auto texted is words that need apostrophe or the letter I. Its my big fingers that always make a mistake and that mistake can't be predicted. Can anyone give me a hint on how to make Auto Text work most effectively?

steve, it does a lot more than that if you will look through the autotext file i mentioned, you will see what all it can do.

for instance, if you commonly type the name of your company, say "Xerox Limited, Incorporated", you can set up AutoText for when you type XLI to spell it out exactly fully typed.

I've noticed that my fat thumbs hit the 'b' key when I want the 'n' key. So I created an autotext entry to change "thabks" to "thanks." So, you can set up some of those if you like. Also, the spell check helps immensly here too. I have mine set to automatically spell check before sending an email.

There is no predictive text for the Qwerty model devices. T9 refers to a completely different keyboard that is on a standard phone.

AutoText can be a huge help after you get it set up. I still add a shortcut on occasion.

IMHO, if you've got a full qwerty keyboard then predictive text is not an improvement. As it is, on my Curve if I type "im" it gets formatted for me to "I'm". No need to capitalize the i or add the apostrophe while typing as the Blackberry will do it for me. And spellcheck has saved me a lot of time as well. Pretty potent combo.

???
How is predictive text not an improvement over a a full QWERTY keyboard? I think even microsoft figured this out with excel years ago. Predictive text can be a humongous timesaver. So far, I have found that entering text in the 8310 is more laborious than necessary. This is true in all apps. Not once have I experienced any timesaving text entry programming on this device other than autoformatting of grammar (which is actually great but not nearly enough). I am currently prowling this forum looking for answers and there seem to be none.

You're not using AutoText then. Try turning it on in Options. It doesn't correct grammar, that I know of

Yep, a grammar corrector would be nice.

I don't see a problem with having a predictive text program on the BB. However, my guess is that it would just take away memory space that is already in high demand on the newer devices, especially the wifi devices.

Of course autotext is on. It really is not useful though. Unless I decide to memorize yet another interface's set of abbreviations, I am really out of luck.

I do not have time for that. I am an architect (of architcture not software) + project manager. I spent most of my days attempting to become semi-fluent across the spectrum of disciplines I encounter. If an interface is not working for me, I ditch it.

So far Blackberry is far more robust, responsive and fast than the treo I was using. However, predictive text needn't be its own program. It is already built into office software as I mentioned previously.

Also, it does correct some grammar (I should have been more specific before and mentioned SOME). It can capitalize and put in some punctuation for me. You may have misread my entry. I was not requesting such a feature. I was mentioning that I am glad it has some capability to do this but it is not enough to be a satisfactory productivity tool.

Then again, what other choices are there?

Maybe the Symbian systems can do this? They seem almost as robust as blackberry from what I read...
