Hello! I own a t-mobile USA branded 8900 and had a few questions about using it internationally. I often take short trips overseas, and wanted to use it-- however I've heard some horror stories about t-mobile charging huge fees even when the phone is off (voicemail, missed calls). So I wanted to use the phone with either a cheap temporary SIM or or no SIM (wifi).
My questions about this are:
1. If I put a new SIM in, will my phone still try to connect to my t-mobile BB account somehow? I noticed the routing table/service books still lists my old info even without a SIM in, and I'm afraid it will still know my old e-mail accounts and thus try to connect to my t-mo BB account.
2. If the new SIM doesn't have a BB data plan, can I still use it for TCP only? Will this work just like a regular phone, i.e. new SIM = no contact with old provider at all?
3. If I use it without a SIM installed, is there any way it will remember it is on t-mobile and attempt to contact my t-mobile bb account?
My phone is currently locked to t-mobile, but I am considering getting it unlocked if it will work with temp SIMs.
1. It may, but assuming conditions in 2 it won't be able to. The BIS isn't hosted by your provider it's hosted by Rim.
2. Yes if the SIM you use supports WAP or Direct TCP (set the APN)
3. As per 1. I've experimented by taking my SIM out and trying to connect the BIS via Wi-Fi and it doesn't work. Normal TCP/IP stuff over Wi-Fi does though.
Why not just get a cheap unlocked phone that you can do this with?

Ah ok, thanks for the info. Well that's the conundrum: I have an old unlocked winmo phone (xda atom life) that I could use, but I find I'm missing my 8900 It'd be nice if I could just carry one around and swap out the SIM without worrying about the bb trying to phone home.
