Setting up the Modem

First follow the steps previously suggested of uninstalling any prior or updated version of the desktop software and then do a fresh install of the 4.1 version on the CD.

After completing this step, go to My Computer and right click and select properties. Go to the hardware tab and click on Device Manager.

Looking down the tree you should see Modems. Click on the + if you have one and you should see whatever your hardware modem is and a new modem called Standard Modem. Right click on Standard Modem and select Properties. With your 8700 connected via a USB cable first, click on the Diagnositics tab and then select Query Modem. This will show you that you are able to communicate with the modem and everything is ok so far. Don't worry about which AT commands are supported or not supported.

Next, click on the Advanced tab, and enter the following into the Extra Initialization Commands: +cgdcont=1,"IP","proxy" you can then close thte section and exit out of the Device Manager.

Next, right click on My Netwrok Places and select properties. Us the new connection wizard to create a new connection. Select Standard Modem as the modem when the list of devices is presented. When it asks for the phone number to dial enter *99# as the number. You should be able to levae user name and password blank. If blank does not work try:
User Name: [email address]

Password: CINGULAR1

You should be good to go.

Hope this helps. It works very well for me. I used it in the Dallas Airport yesterday for a couple of hours and it worked great. Even though Dalls offers T-Mobile WiFi, I have used it before and at $9.95 for a day when I only needed it for a couple of hours, I decided to try my 8700c as a modem. It was almost as fast as the WiFi I have gotten there in the past and I saved $9.95.

My desktop manager is on my Home PC, do I need to install it on my laptop and follow the instruction on the laptop?

Yes, you would need to set desktop manager 4.1 up on your laptop.

No, this is for AT&T Blue on Cingular. Check Mark's FAQs for the VZW string.

I don't know but I would guess they won't. I think you need a different initiation string and you do need the username and password I listed.

I am guessing that becasue I originally had un unlimited data plan on AT&T I am still on that plan. I am not sure since I don't see the bill.

I didn't have prior BB software installed on my laptop. I installed the 4.1 software and when I got to the Dianognize step, I got this error:

"The modem failed to respond, Make sure it is properly connected and turned on. If it is an internal modem or is connected, verify the interrupt for the port is prperly set."

I am running XP/Home with a 8700c, I also have a wireless card which I have tried with and without it connected.

Did you unistall the older version first. Rim software is funky it likes to be the only software and if it finds a previous version it may be having issues, so again I would uninstall both versions now and reboot prior to reinstalling the 4.1

Install both the handheld and the desktop. Then make sure your device is connected (showing connected on the desktop software). Then try agaisn it should work.

KonTiki - I had never installed any BB software on my laptop in the past.

Barjohn - I downloaded and installed the handheld software from Cingular, but still got the same results. The standard modem is pointing to Com4 instead of the USB port, but that is defined as a "RIM Virtual Serial Port" if that matters.

Were there any settings I needs to set first?

My BlackBerry Desktop manager is set to USB. The Standard Modem is showing COM16 in my case (this doesn't matter). And below is what I get when I run the diagnostics with the 8700 connected via USB to the Desktop Manager.

Any Ideas?

Edit: Got that fixed

Now when I connect to the modem connection it says "there was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device)

Edit: Fixed that.

Now I get: ERROR 736: The remote computer terminated the control protocol

Airpoppoff - How did you fix the first 2, I seem to be at that point myself

I am in no hurry to get this fixed, but it is the last piece of my puzzle for the BB which I got to do email, talk, IM and tether my laptop on vacation.

When we go on vacation we generally take 100 pictures a day and upload them to our website, there are days that goes to 400 or so (like the Macy's T-Day parade last week). Each picture averages 150K, so that means on average we upload 15M or so a day with peaks of 75M. Most of the middle level hotels provide free connections, but it seems some still want to charge $10/day to connect.

Even if I get this working, am I possibly looking at some huge charges for a weeks vacation and 150M of uploads?

Once you get this far and an error 736, it means that either your initialization string is incorrect (most likely) or your username, password is wrong. If you are Cingulare Orange (not former AT&T) the string I show above is NOT the correct string. If you are former AT&T, then did you include the quotation marks? You should have entered the string exactly as I typed it. With a Blue account the username and password are ignored, with an Orange account they must be the username and password as shown in Mark's section os setting up a modem. I hope this helps.

I am a former ATT customer, I will check my modem string when I get home.

The desktop manager has to be running right?
