Not necessarily ... while YMMV, I have used this method (on a Pearl, haven't "yet" tried it on my 8830) and it does work. The OS is upgraded and you stay connected to your BES:

When you upgrade the handheld the shared key between the handheld and BES are lost. Even if the service books were backed up you would still have to regenerate encryption keys again. If you are not using Desktop Manager the only way to get new keys would be to reactivate.
How would you do this through Desktop Manager? I'm assuming the user would need to have DM 4.2.2 ?
This will work with any version of the DM. When I upgrade mine I usually log on to my company VPN first, then open DM, it asks which Outlook profile to use. Then it shows "connected" (BB is connected) and "online" meaning it's online with my BES email. Then when the upgrade is done I leave it plugged in for a few more minutes and it automatically starts Enterprise Activation. Once it's started you can unplug it and it will finish on it's own. If you need to start an EA many times you can go to Email Settings and in one of the tabs, I forget which one, you can regenerate the encryption keys. That will start EA after an upgrade if for some reason it didn't start.
