How to use gps receiver for 8320

I just bought an external gps reciever for my phone which works with the blackberry maps function. But I don't feel like I am using the device to it's full capabilities. I got the Freedom 2000 but is there another program I should download to work with it?
I drive a lot during work and I mainly am looking for something that will show me road conditions and directions etc.
Help Please!!
