Default IT Policy - Harsh?

Please Login to Remove!

What do you think of the following policy I am thinking of deploying?

Password: Required
Minimum Length: 5
Password requirements: at least 1 alpha and 1 numeric
character
User Can Disable: False
Maximum Password Age: 90 Days
Maximum Password History: 8 (can not use the past 8 passwords)
Maximum Security Timeout: 30 Minutes
Password Timeout: 30 Minutes
User Can Change Timeout: True, but only make shorter
Long-Term Timeout: True, Will lock even if in use
Long-term Timeout Challenge Time: 60 Minutes
Password attempts: 10, then blackberry will disable and
wipe itself, can be re-initiated with
our server after this.

I know the users will hate me for it, but losing a blackberry could be like losing your laptop with sensitive information and you email alone can be destroyed plus much other disaster.

I dont think this will be too harsh, would you do anythign different?

A bit tighter than yours, but we haven't had any complaints from users at all. they appreciate that it has to be like this incase they loose it!

The only issue I could see you have, which would actually depend on your end users, is that you won't allow them to use the last 8 passwords. We initially had that set but people would forget their new passwords very frequently and we would be forced to wipe their device and start over. The issue occurs because of the Content Protection issue where everything is encrypted with that password. If they forget the password, we can't reset it remotely.

Other than that, it looks similar to alot that I have read/heard about.

That's just cruel, most users will wipe a handheld trying to get a number to show up.

And protect the SIM card!

The first BB we had reported as lost, I killed the device, stopped redirection etc etc but then the next day our carrier called to advise we had run up over £2000 (nearly $4000) in phone calls all over the world when they put the SIM into a normal (stolen) mobile.

Something easily overlooked when you're more concerned about the data.

This is very similar to what our IT Policy is - 6 characters (1 num, 1 alpha), 60 minute max (user can change timeout up to 60 minutes). Users cannot disable the password, either.

Just about the only person who hasn't complained in one way or another is the owner of the company.

Call your carrier and get it blocked like a normal lost mobile.

Just have your carrier do a sim swap to a new sim. We keep 20 or so cold ones here just for that.
