I agree with you that this phone would have been cool with quad band GSM, but what incentive would VZW have in selling such a unit at that point? That's not how they do business. Heck, they are probably pulling their hair out every time someone asks to have the GSM side unlocked because their owners (Vodafone) loose money.
Imagine how cool it would be to walk into a RIM store (just like Nokia does it) and buy a BB with unlocked/unbranded CDMA/GSM(Quad), GPS, WIFI, and camera built in. Can you say
SOLD? Ahh, it's nice to dream sometimes. Imagine taking that phone to any cell carrier you wish and activating it and being able to flip it to WIFI (VoIP) mode when you're at home or office to keep the minutes down on the cell plan. OMG, that would just rock.
