Default BES and MDS

Please Login to Remove!

I'm hoping the knowledgeable people in this forum will be able to help.

We are planning to deploy Blackberry Enterprise server 4.1 with a requirement to allow users access to the corporate intranet and the internet using MDS (we require the browser traffic to go via the corporate network/proxy). The Blackberry browser will be used and the IBS browser will be disabled.

We plan to deploy a Blackberry Enterprise server with a remote SQL database server and a remote MDS server.

Looking at the setup options, BES has two remote MDS components, the "MDS connection services" and the "MDS services".

From what I have read and what I have been told so far, the MDS connection service allows users to access online content on the corporate intranet and the internet via the corporate network.

The MDS services provide connectivity between MDS studio apps on the handheld and enterprise applications.

To me the solution appears to be simply installing the MDS connection service. The MDS services would not be required.

My doubts have been raised after reading about the BlackBerry MDS Data Optimization Service, which “transforms existing server-side content and data into a format that is optimized for efficient wireless transmission and for use on mobile devices”. This component is part of the “MDS services” and not part of the “MDS Connection service” remote component.

My question is, to allow the users to access online content on the corporate intranet and the Internet, will it suffice to only install the MDS connection service or will we also need the MDS services remote component?

I hope someone here can provide a second opinion.

Thanks in advance.

You won't need MDS services for your requirements.
MDS connection service is part of the base BES installation and will suit your needs just fine.

Aren't MDS services used for creating BB apps? I seem to remember RIM telling me not install MDS services unless I was planning on writing apps.

Exactly; it can always be installed later.
