Apologies if this is a basic question.

I am using the Roxio software to convert CDs into MP3 format then transfer them on to my Blackberry 8300.

I want the best sound quality, regardless of how much memory this will use.

Therefore when I convert the CDs, I opt for 320 kbps (best quality).

The next step is to transfer the files to the Blackberry and then I am presented with a choice:

Copy with no conversion; or
Convert for optimal playback (recommended).

Does anyone know what "optimal playback" means? Does it mean best sound quality or most efficient use of memory? Given that I am after the best sound quality and am starting off with 320 kbps, I thought that any further conversion should be avoided but am I right?

If the music is already in MP3, turn mass storage on and drop the files onto your media card.

Plug you BB in and select mass storage mode, you will be able to use it as a drive, drag on drop the music into the music folder, save yourself the headache..

I'd also recommend just using Mass Storage Mode. However, if you want to proceed down this path:

Consider that there's no way that you can "convert" a file to add quality, regardless of what the file is. It only gets degraded as you convert (granted, not all conversion process are lossy) and compress further.

Personally, I've found that using a better encoder (like lame) makes a bigger difference and is more efficient than simply increasing the sampling rate.
