Not everyone had problems. I talked to someone with an 8320 on TMo who had no issues at all. He has a yahoo address and all worked fine for him all day. My GMail was down most of the afternoon.

Typically when outages happen, especially at this magnitude, some customers can request a root cause analysis report from the vendor, whether it be AT&T or RIM. These usually take up to 7 days to be researched and approved for distribution. I would say that there's a good chance you'll read about it in the news and/or on these forums from those who have access to request the root cause analysis.

Still no update or root cause? Have any of you had word from your vendors or RIM?

Yes, it has been mentioned in several blogs and sites that cause was due to a glitch in a system upgrade that day.

Got it... from Reuters

"RIM's early investigation ... points to a problem with an internal data routing system within the BlackBerry service infrastructure that had been recently upgraded," the company said in a statement.

"The upgrade was part of RIM's routine and ongoing efforts to increase overall capacity for longer term growth."

Yeah, Jim Balsillie called to let me know that the problem is solved and was caused by a botched software upgrade on some server.
