Keep in mind that this device is more focused to business users.
RIM is quoted as saying, "The BlackBerry 8820 smartphone allows BlackBerry smartphone users with qualifying data plans to access BlackBerry data services using a wireless network, a Wi-Fi network, or both networks simultaneously." including BES, MDS, BIS, BB Messenger, PIN Messaging and other data services "Having the option to simultaneously access both a wireless network and a Wi-Fi network allows users to do multiple tasks at once. For example... can send email messages using a Wi-Fi network, while conducting a phone call using the wireless network."
I'm working with my corporate IT group to help me understand any necessary components from the integration end (RIM calls it the 'BlackBerry Router') but I'm not getting very far with them. I figure once I get it, then I'll raise a bigger stink.
I'm personally more focused on using VPN or IPSec over Wi-Fi speeds to access my internal business systems. I've got a 7290 now and GPRS is slower than booting my laptop. I can think of (in my case) nearly 90% of my day to day work being 'tether-free', assuming Wi-Fi availability, with no recognizable delay of service to my internal customers.
Panera at lunch, local pub in the afternoon, golf clubhouse - think of the possibilities...
Then other apps come into play; Corporate IM, Corporate Presence, VoIP Softphone (skype, Cisco, etc.), and so on.
