I would give my left nut to be able to input Japanese.
Does anybody know any way to do this without having the BES available?
(I am willing to pay for the software, but would like to avoid subscription services)

I'm taking a guess here that Japanese isn't going to be made available by RIM. I say this because the Blackberry, like other Western cellular devices, does not operate on the Japanese cellular network. I'm not an authority on the topic and there are others here who could explain in far greater detail (or correct me ) than I can.

I'm excited someone brought this thread back to life and I saw it. I've been waiting for Chinese font support for the BB for a while. I wasn't actively hunting, but happy to see it.

I am using Hong Kong CSL 3.71 (3.09) firmware on my Cingular 8700c with all Cingular stuffs on it. Although I cannot enter Japanese text. I can view Japanese web page with no problem (tried on www.yahoo.co.jp). I also tried to send Japanese e-mail from my computer to my Blackberry - and this is interesting - the Japanese e-mail would only display properly when I send it under UTF-8 text encoding.

Chen, I installed the same OS and had the same results as you.

Unfortunately, most of the Japanese emails I receive are encoded in SJIS, or something other than UTF-8.

This device would be infinetely more valuable for me if it supported Japanese input, as well as the ability to read various japanese encodings.
