There is no third choice for cingular to surprise us with which means their 8800 will simply have a wifi card as my laptop does. And when active the cell network will have to be down.

I'm on cingular now cause they beat tmo for me with coverage. But I think tmo + uma on 8800 will win a lot of that deciding factor stuff for people over cingular 8800 + no cell service when on wifi.
Are you saying (speculating) that if you start the WFi radio on the 8800, then you will need to turn off the cell radio? Just wondering if you know that to be true? (im not flaming here). I have had mobile phones (Windows based) that had Wifi and you could have both radios on at the same time. The browser (or whatever app you are using), first try to establish a connection over the wifi connection (if the wifi radio is on), and if not, then establish the data connection over the cell network. I dont think use of the 2 radios will be mutually exclusive.

It should be interesting to see how this turns out. I know VOIP options aren't that great for people with asymmetrical broadband that don't have good QOS. I know I sure don't at this point as the consumer grade QOS I've tinkered with hasn't worked so well.

Personally, I'd rather just have good cellular coverage than some band-aid solution like this.

i am using VoIP (vonage) at my house with asymetrical DSL (1.5 down, 256k up), with no issues at all. I also use skype on my laptop using my sprint EVDO data card. I get about 600K down, but I think the uplink is only about 120K. Anyone know what the floor bandwidth requirement is for VoIP telephony?

As with everything around technology, it depends. With G.711 codec and Ethernet, about 80kbps/call.
