Sounds like they have implemented the volume keys through the media API in 4.3. Once our devices get the update, we'll have it as well.

Volume keys don't work, however, if I'm not in the player. Was on the main menu page just now, tried to increase the volume, no luck.

I think it got lost in this last effort to get rid of the buffering stutters.
Not sure I'd recommend they set that as a default, because although we both would like it, some may not.

Here's the issue I think they need to work on: I start up Audible, to start listening where I left off. First thing I'll do is hit the '1' key, to back up 30 seconds. The result is - it goes into "buffering" mode for over 30 seconds, during which the keys won't respond to further commands. So, after I've waited for that, I hit the '1' key again (so I've backed up a total of 1 minute) and wait all over again for "buffering" with dead keys. Finally, I click the trackball for "Play" and what happens??? Buffering again, for ANOTHER 30 seconds plus! Logically, the LAST one of those 3 "buffering" delays is the only one which should happen. My presses of the '1' key should just back the counter up, but IF you're going to buffer ANYWAY when I hit "Play" then why do those extra bufferings after every single '1' key press?? Makes no sense, and is highly time consuming and frustrating. Run the counter for either backspace, fast forward or reverse functions and keep track of WHERE you need to buffer FROM - but do NOT buffer until the Play button is pressed, those extra bufferings are totally useless and redundant.

Manually transferred another new book and this one shows up correctly in the Books list by purchase date this time (go figure).

Had no luck doing an OTA download of a part of another book last night. Received the message: "Communication error. Please try again or review your network settings as described in the..." (I have my font set too big to read the remainder of the message and can't scroll down.) I have a bad signal at my house, commonly dropping calls, so will try again from another location. It's still trying, tho. Not sure if it's the bad signal here or my settings. Not sure which network settings I should check or what they should be.

Very low battery drain from the player. With no sleep timer, I ended up having it playing all night and still had 3 bars left on the battery indicator this morning.

Agree on the annoyance factor associated with re-starting the player after an interruption from a call or whatever. It does a very good job at placekeeping, however.

If they would give us external control of the pause/play, I wouldn't mind so much. Mute button on top of device and button on headset mic is the convention. I think that would make me forget about that problem.

Well, my stronger opinion is - PLEASE get rid of the extra "buffering" events, as they are useless, time consuming and FRUSTRATING!!!

My download scheduler isn't working. Not sure why. Manually initiated downloads work fine where I have a good signal.

Is there a way to delete/unschedule a download?

My transferred books and podcasts are playing beautifully. But I tried listening to the downloaded free content this afternoon and it was full of bleeps and skreetches. It seems like the file is corrupted rather than a buffering or segmentation issue.

Just got in, downloaded and listened to 5 minutes just fine.

Trying to download a larger portion of the file, and it downloads 2 megs or so and then hangs, then gets the disconnected message, and I have do to a battery pull before audible will try and download again.

I should have the room to download 30 minutes of a book with 9.9 megs free the 30 minutes requiring 7ish amount of space.

Not sure if there is a configuration issue, or I just need a flashcard.

Edit:

I have a flashcard now and it still dies at or around 2.5meg, when it dies all other internet traffic (opera mini, vznav, built in browser) does not work until I do a battery pull

I believe this is the dreaded Verizon problem I have been hearing from people. It is my understanding that this is a carrier limitation. Are you connecting through BIS or BES? Just curious.

BIS

I have found that doing alt right-shift delete soft reboot also restores my network connectivity.

Possibly I won't be able to use this if it is a verizon issue.

Just download them via the desktop client and copy them over. It is much faster that way. Remember. This is beta software. There are going to be bugs and issues. That is what you signed up for. Hang in there.

Hi Grimlin, I wanted to verify that you're passing on our posts here to audible.com.

The auto-refresh/auto-download function is still not working for my subscriptions. For example, the NYT audio digest won't automatically download the latest issue. Further, my ability to manually initiate the download is inconsistent. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't, and I can't identify anything specific that is making the difference.

I was listening to a book yesterday, received a BB message, navigated to read it, but when I tried to return to the player, I ended up at the audible opening screen, it wouldn't load and gave me the endless hour-glass, couldn't escape. Had to do a battery pull to stop it, and log in to audible when I brought up the player again. Also lost my bookmark.

Yes, I am. I compile a list of issues with every release and send it to them. As there are additions to the list, I send an appended update.

I think I am going to take a stab at prioritizing the list tonight. I will update the first post when I do and would like some input from others once I have it updated.

Thanks

Although I've been using the Alt-return key to get to other apps, it would sure be nice to have a "switch to other apps" functions on each screen that would pause playback to navigate to another app, and then let me switch back into the player. I've had to do a battery pull a couple of times after going to another app and then trying to return. Both times I ended up on the intro audible screen with the indicator showing it has loaded to about 75, just dead in the water.

Am still very happy to have the player, however!

Are these other apps accessing the MicroSD card? 75% is about where the file IO takes place. It might be a file locking issue. Any way for you to categorize the apps that make it happen? Is there a pattern?

Grimlin - I decided to take a stab at prioritizing the issues/bugs, from my perspective - so here's my thoughts:

Current Known issues and recommendations:
Bugs:
  • Only files with lower case file extensions are recognized(.aa vs .AA) - New Error minor for me
  • Popping - Replaced stuttering. Happens in 4min intervals. minor for me
  • Extra Buffering (Pause,RW,Play) - Still exists BIG deal for me - the multiple (slow) buffering events drives me crazy
  • First letter CAPS in logon fields - Still exists generic BB issue, used to dealing with this one in ALL logons on websites, etc
  • End of Book issue - still exists. Lose about 10sec for ever hour of content. #1 required fix - missing the last minute or so of a great book is HIGHLY frustrating and unacceptable!
  • Downloads happen regardless of settings. - Still exists haven't messed with auto downloads, can't comment
Added Download, set it to start on refresh
    Auto Refresh is unchecked
    Starts anyway.
  • menus are not consistent across screens. - still exists minor for me
Settings only shows up in Local Playlist and Books screen
Some screens have GoTo in the menu. Some directly specify screen
  • menu border "frame" flickers - fixed in library. Others screen menus still flicker. - 1.0.66 minor for me
  • Bookmarks are unsorted. Recommend Title Ascending and Time Descending. - Still exists minor for me
  • "BAD DNS" when logging in - Had to delete desktop(IPPP) service book to force connection through carrier BIS. Appears that new network connection code has introduced this error. Highly recommend changing preference to include (WiFi, BIS, BES) Doesn't happen for me - only with BES
  • Bookmarks are storing wrong time index. 02:47:16 becomes 02:45:54. Consequently, 02:50:06 becomes 02:49:54. Notice a pattern? It is passing the time index of the buffer start to the bookmark instead of passing the time index from within the buffer. This should be a quick fix by changing the variable name that is used to set the bookmark. That being said, I think you need to keep the current functionality of starting back at the beginning of the last buffer time index when you exit and restart the player. It gives you a little catch-up to where you were. If this last part doesn't make sense, let me know. It is a bit important to me. - New error minor in general - and I have to disagree with the last part you state - in general, one should expect the player to restart exactly where you bookmark it - and do the "catch up" via jump-back (withOUT multiple buffering!)
  • Inconsistencies in bookmark time fields. Hour just replaces number. Min and Sec prompt that field is full. Recommend standardizing on one or the other. - Still exists minor for me
Recommended Improvements:
  • Filters - Need list filtering for book titles minor for me
  • Enable Hard buttons for pause/play, volume perfectly happy with trackball for pause/play - volume should be handled by the dedicated volume buttons on the side (TeleNav does this despite OS level
  • Detach trackball from direct FF and RW. Holstering is problematic. Agreed, frustrating. Suggestion (vs detaching completely): Moving trackball left/right highlights FF or RW, then must click trackball - then in FF/RW mode - click again to exit that mode and resume play
  • Bluetooth Audio - Since your audio content is mono, it could output to standard bluetooth headsets (not stereo bluetooth). Please don't do this by default - I like being able to have my phone conversations via bluetooth but the audio book via speaker - so make it a selectable option if implemented

The apps have been phone calls and BB or gmail messages. I don't think any of those access the microSD card?

I'm getting stereo bluetooth from the audible player and iTunes with a Motorola S9 headset. The audiobooks aren't stereo? I can also select mono for the headset on the laptop and then the books play through the left side then, but otherwise they play through both sides.

I'm listening to a book that was produced in 2003 today and have been getting the stuttering at 4-min intervals, rather than just popping.

I also noticed that the volume buttons on the side of the 8130 only work when the app is up, rather than playing in the background. I have to navigate back to the app for them to work. (no big deal, just interesting.)
