Well, I purchased my 8830 form Alltel yesterday and spent a lot of time trying to get the ring tone to a volume that was acceptable. After searching the internet I find out that the 8800 series has an inherent problem with ring tone volume.

Yes, there may be ways to patch around it, but that should not be my problem. I cannot believe that Blackberry has put out a product that is on the edge of being non-functional and that Alltel has just started to carry it.

Hearing a phone ring is one of the most important features of a phone. Guess I need to go back to my $30 old faithful and continue to carry my PDA as well.

Very disappointed Blackberry owner.

Hanknay, it is not an "inherent" problem with 8800s. I have an 8800, I have low hearing in both ears and don't have a problem with it. I don't have any patch, just a good ringtone. Your device and others may have had a problem, but not the entire 8800 or 8830 model series.

Sorry, you might have a lemon. Try another or enjoy your other device. BlackBerrys are much more capable in its collective technology than to be judged by a low ringtone. If all you need is a good loud ringtone--you can have your socks blown off.

Of course, that same discussion has been had with the 8100s and the 8700s as well.

I agree with JSanders, it's not an inherent problem. At first I selected a ringtone that did not have a tone high enough to be heard in noisy environments. So I change it to one that does. And there is another beautiful feature called "vibrate" that's included in most cell phones including the 8830. If there is not a ringtone you like that comes with the phone millions of ringtones are available online that should meet your needs.

I am using the default ring tone - which emulates the old square land line Bell phones that literally had a bell & striker in them (circa 1960's-70's). Very loud! As a matter of fact, I have thought about turning it down or selecting another tone for incoming calls. Either you had a lemon BB or you didn't try the other tones.

I just got my 8830 from Alltel also. Most of the ringtones are very quiet, but there are a few stock ringers that are really loud. If you don't understand your BB, there are plenty of people on here(as well as many 8830 ringtone threads) that will help you out. The 8830 is a bit different at getting the highest volume out of ringtones.
I was also upset because I thought the ringtones weren't the loudest when I first got it. Now, I think the 8830 can be as loud as the 8703e

So many users set their profiles to "loud" and expect the loud ringtones not realizing that on the "loud" profile, the ringer is set to medium. My ringtone would cause temporary deafness if you were too close to it when it goes off!

Yes, the posters above have pretty much covered it.

Also, in general but not always, the ringers are louder than the notifiers; because ringers are well, ringers.

While it's true that a notifier makes for a cool ringtone, it might not be as suitable as a ringer would be because notifiers are meant to be just that.

And as others have suggested, if you don't like the stock ringtones, you can download others, and/or use a 3rd party sound gain application and increase the gain on your ringtone(s).

I don't get the low ringer volume complaints at all. I can never put my phone on loud as it is far too disruptive.

Either the people doing the complaining are trying custom tunes that don't work well (for whatever resason) or they are the ones I want to smash their phones when I can hear them ringing from 100 feet away.

Oh well.. My 8830 ring tons stock are plenty loud and I can hear them at a loud baseball game. The guy must of been 60+ years old with a hearing problem.

Man! you guys are a tough crowd! lol. It is true, as much as most do not like to admit it, the ringer volume is noticably lower when you are coming from a non-blackberry device. If you have been using nothing but blackberries for some time, then you will of course not agree as you have grown accustomed to the device. I have become accustomed to it in less than a year's time, but believe me when I first came over to the dark side from windows mobile I was plenty pissed with the volume of the blackberry device set at it's loudest, but I toughed it out and now it's just fine for me. I've asked many a people why blackberries are muted in tone and quite a few have answered it is becuase it is a business device and it is not professional to have your phone heard 100 feet away everytime it rings. I have mines set to vibrate 2-3 times before it actually rings, so that too helps me not miss calls. Don't give up on your blackberry just yet, it gets better with time, especially the 8830, that is one cool mother trucker! lol

For the brief time I had my 8830, I thought the ringers were plenty loud, especially when compared to my 7250 and 7520. I didn't keep mine because the phone was too loud when I held it firmly. The squeeks and creaks drove me up the wall. That and the keyboard, but the ringer volume was plenty loud for me.

Okay maybe I'm missing something but where can you set the preferences for the ringer other then in the profiles? Can you adjust the volume for the ringers?

You can't set the ringtone volume other than in Profiles.

I think you are right - I came from a cell phone which rang MUCH louder. Selecting the loud profile and editing it so that the ring volume is loud still is nowhere close to the volume of my last cell phone. A firmware update could solve this problem as using the media player to play the same mp3 as I have used for years, and cranking the volume up results in plenty of loudness. If only the "loud" setting resulted in the same volume as the media player set to full volume, there would be no complaints.

I still don't get it...just because it's not as loud as a "normal" phone doesn't mean it cannot be heard. I can't hear my regular phone ring in every room of the house (I consider this a good thing) so why should I need to hear my cell, given that i can take it with me at any time? Not to mention it still is plenty loud. I never have a problem hearing it in the next room.

My wish is that it vibrated with more force, as I think the vibration is too weak.

I have missed calls when I have been in noisy environments (eg. a baseball game) that I would not have missed with my cell. What's the big deal with making the 8830 ring as loud as a cell phone if the owner desires, especially since it's technically capable of doing so? In the office you could always set the volume to a quieter tone.

I don't disagree if it rang louder I wouldn't set it on loud.

I just don't think the ringer volume is worthy of sending the phone back.

I have never been good at hearing any phone in truly noisy environments. I figure if I can't hear it ring I can't have a decent conversation. I always set my phones to vibrate when in noisy envronments though.
