Default AT&T's & GPS on the 8820...?

Please Login to Remove!

Please forgive me if this is old, worn-out news...but I just ran into this as I was Googling "BlackBerry 8820", since I may be getting one soon as a partner to my 8310 Curve...and it really chapped my butt!!

EXCLUSIVE: AT&T neuters the BlackBerry 8820 in favor of the iPhone | BlackBerry Cool

If this is true, and AT&T has effectively blocked the 8820 from using any other GPS application besides TeleNav...is there any way to "unbrand" the AT&T 8820 to open the door to GPS apps that are just effective...and cheaper?

AT&T bastardization won't keep me from getting and using the 8820...but I would certainly like more freedom to buy and use whatever GPS app I want.

There is a better chance that they neutered the Curve so that it doesn't support Wi-Fi and threaten the Iphone. That would be more likely. Its forcing me to buy a T-MObile and to unlock it.

They didn't neuter the Curve, they just offer the GPS model

I doubt very seriously that AT&T is worried about either BlackBerry threatening the sales of the iPhone. The devices appeal to a totally different genre of customer...or at least for the most part.

The iPhone appeals to the consumer that is totally into the glitz and glamour of the display and media features...and to whom the smart-phoney apps are not a big deal. The BlackBerry appeals mostly to those who can and will use the features that make BB the icon that it is...as a superior communication device, but don't mind a mediocre camera and media player built in as a bonus.

lol, buggy? I have not noticed one bug in it in the months I have been using it. None.

Can you specify what was buggy to you?

Have to agree with JSanders and John Clark. I use TeleNav on my 8800 a lot, and it works great. Don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about it being "buggy" and its certainly not at all for me.

Must be an end-user error. I've not found one bug with Telenav. Works perfectly for myself and my fleet of 43 field technicians.
It's by far the finest GPS nav solution available for the BlackBerry and well worth the small monthly fee.

TeleNav worked great for me in the past...and has during it's free trial period with my new 8310. I just have come to the conclusion that I don't travel enough, or need GPS enough to justify even the $10 monthly fee for the service. Maybe I will reconsider things in the future...but for now, Google Maps works fine for my needs.

AND, rightfully, I changed the title of this thread. Nothing was neutered.
