Unhappy 8100 As a Modem? I have issues...

Please Login to Remove!

OK, so I have read through all the forums...I am getting a bit frustrated though...

Here is my issue:

I have done an uninstall/reinstall of the BB software 4.2 sp2 a few times to make sure it is clean while trying to install the modem.

After I do the install, I can connect to my BB just fine with BB Desktop Manager add apps or do backup just fine. Redirector works fine.

So, here is my issue when I try to set it up as a modem.
1 - I don't have the standard modem installed, and the instructions I have seen don't work on my comp.
2 - the RIM Virtual Port is not installed, or I cant see it when I look in my device manager - see attachment.

So, my question is how to get those installed so I can finally tether my Pearl.

Thank you all for your help.

Copied from the site you gave me:

Install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager

* When you install BlackBerry Desktop Software, the drivers that enable the BlackBerry device to communicate through the USB port and virtual COM port are installed. The Standard Modem, which is used by dial-up networking, is also installed.

Note: If you are upgrading your BlackBerry Desktop Software from version 4.0 to 4.1, the required Virtual COM Port and Standard Modem might be removed during the upgrade process. If this is the case, re-install the BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.1 or later and choose the Repair option to re-install these components.
This is what I have done in different times and it does not work. The modem and the virtual COM is not installed.

If it was that easy for me, I would have been done like 4 days ago.
Thanks...

Thank you for replying! I don't think they are disabled. I didn't see a clear place in my BIOS to disable com ports. There was one option for serial ports and it was set to COM1.

I will look at Dell's website to see if there is a different place to enable them. I am running on a Dell Latitude D820 (2GB RAM and Duo processor) - so only 4 months old or so... New work computer. There is also the possibility that the XP image they use is blocking these from being installed, but I have admin access to it and can install anything else that I want to.

Thank you again!

Here is a page on the Blackberry Support Site that addresses your issue of the modem not appearing. It even tells you how to manually add the modem if the install just won't do it.

Red face Desktop Manager Required

You have to have the BB connected via USB and have Desktop Manager running in order to tether the BB. Virtual serial ports ( example: COM5 and COM6 on my PC ) when you install Desktop Manager. You have to manually add a Standard Modem that uses that port ( my instructions said it had to be a 33600 baud Standard Modem, btw ) .

Who is your carrier?

If I use this method of connecting to the Internet using my BB Pearl, will I get charged extra if I don't have the tethered plan? I've got the unlimited data plan, but it doesn't include thethered.

As far as I know, it just uses data, so your data plan should cover it.
