Welcome to the forums!

You can used Blackberry Desktop Manager to sync your BB to Outlook.

And Blackberry Messenger is an IM application that is Blackberry to Blackberry only. Need to know the other person's BB PIN number in order to communicate with them.

I will freely plagarize JSanders here:

Use Desktop Manager to sync the data from your Outlook to your BB (both ways).
Get Desktop Manager version 4.2 Service Pack 2 (you can get the version withOUT Roxio media software if you like.)
BlackBerry Desktop Manager Downloads - BlackBerryFAQ

THEN, you will perform a SYNC with your BB. Follow the instructions in the Sync Configuration TAB to select Outlook as your Calendar, Tasks, Memos and Address Book sync.

I run Outlook and sync'ing Contacts really couldn't be easier.

When you run BB Desktop Manager and double click on Synchronize, you get a window in which you can set your sync configuration. It's pretty straight forward and you don't need no stinkin' directions. If all else fails, there is online help.

Once it's set, you don't need to touch the configuration again. Piece 'o cake.

Question BES And Contacts

Just to double check, I use BES to sync email, which works. I thought that my Outlook Calendar and Contacts would also sync, but apparently they are not. In the synchronization settings, I have only "execute Add-in actions" checked.

What should I have checked to get the functionality that I want?

In a related issue, I just switched computers, and I noticed that my custom contact categories have all disappeared. Will syncing with my BB, which has them, bring them back into Outlook?

I'm not sure since I'm running BIS, but then again, it may not matter for Outlook sync. You definitely need to have "Synchronize organizer data" checked on the Desktop Manager or you're going to get Nada.

Also, you need to click on the Configuration tab, and then "Configure synch ..." where you can set the setting for calendars, contacts, tasks, etc.
