Thumbs down Unlocking a new phone

Please Login to Remove!

I'm new at all of this, and want to unlock my 8830 BB. I do not have a sim for it because the phone was a promotional give away, and it has not been activated. Is there anyway to unlock it, or do I have to activate it first? Verizon is absolutley no help at all...

Why do you want to unlock it?

Why does it matter? Maybe there's a legit reason, or maybe he/she just wants to add some value to the device......Who are you to question that?

Relax, fellow member.
I only ask because the user stated they are "new at all of this".
With all the unlocking discussions in this forum, a new user could easily be confused and think that it was a necessary step in getting their device to function.
I'm just trying to understand the user's needs before providing an answer.

A little clarity would surely help the quality of the response, no?

I'm trying to unlock it for a co-worker traveling overseas. They will be picking up sim cards at airports as they travel, and trialing the new device.

Any help would be much appreciated!

To my knowledge (based on other threads in this forum), no one has been able to confirm that they have successfully unlocked an 8830.
There is rumor that one user has been successful in contacting Verizon "Global Support" directly, and they provided an unlock code.
Personally, I'd like to see some screenshots of their Blackberry confirming this, but I don't think it'll happen.

gsmphonesource.com ... which is a very reputable unlock provider... has not been able to unlock the device yet. no codes are available yet. several other users have reported being scammed by unlockblackberry.org in attempts to unlock the 8830

At this point, I think your best bet is to contact Verizon directly, and hope for the best.

Verizon wouldn't help me. They're telling me because there is no phone number or sim card assigned to it, I would have to activate it first, and then have it unlocked (if they agree to it), and then on my own, I would need to de-activate it. I'd rather pay a 3rd party $50 to unlock it, then Verizon $100 for one month's worth of service...

From what I have heard unlocking and using a non-Verizon International SIM violates the Terms of Service and Verizon could (operative word is COULD) terminate your service.
