Default Bb 8980

Please Login to Remove!

New documents seen on the Federal Communications Commission web site provide details about an unannounced BB handset. The 8980, which appears to replace the Curve 8900, has quad-band GSM/EDGE radios in addition to Bluetooth and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Pictures published by the FCC show the 8980 to have a full QWERTY keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, optical trackpad, and 3.5mm headset jack. RIM has not officially announced this handset, and neither have any U.S. carriers.

Interesting, so what would be difference in this 8980 and a 9300 Curve?

The model number?

More of an entry level device?

Could be just something RIM put out to the FCC as wishful thinking?

Could be, or it could even be a device for a specific market, like the 8910 "Harpoon" was only released in China.

But as far as entry level, I think the 8520s cover that.

the 8980 is out and is being tested by a few people, it is known at the atlas for code name, I don't have many details on it besides the fact that it appears to be apart of the Curve family. More to come when I learn more.

**I actually pulled this from another site so here it is**

We have heard rumors and seen pictures of the Blackberry Atlas 8980 for months now. In fact, I remember way back when I got my Tour 9630 the Atlas was rumored to be a variant of that device. Today, courtesy of the FCC, we can derive that it more likely will replace the Curve 8900.

While it takes on the form factor of the Bold 9700, this device will viewed as a lower end model that some have been waiting for. This device will run OS5 upon it's official release. In addition, it will be sporting a quad-band GSM antenna, Wi-Fi b/g/n, and 3.2 megapixel camera with flash. Interesting that this device sees a 3.2 MP cam while the 93x0 series only maintains a 2.0 MP. This device also supports Wi-Fi n while the 93x0 series is only b/g.

Will this device ever support OS6? At this point, your guess is as good as ours, but we'd have to lean towards no considering the 256mb allotted for internal memory.

You can find additional information from the FCC here

I really can't disagree with all of the naysayers out there that claim this is exactly why RIM is in trouble. True, it doesn't bode well when they haven't even announced a device that is clearly behind times. Not to add insult to injury, but releasing a device that is not even 3G at this point seems futile. In other words, you likely won't find me rocking an Atlas on my hip.

However, on contrary I would argue that this device will still appeal to many in the masses, despite it's shortcomings. Aside from the power users that frequent sites like Dcom and CB (among others), many everyday users are looking for a cheap, simple smart phone. By offering these simple devices for free or the low price of $29.99, one could argue that RIM is dominating the entry-level smart phone market. This is a major reason why RIM's sales will never completely diminish.

In our haste to always have the latest and the greatest, let's not forget that there is a device for everybody.
