Default BB 9900 compatibility to networks

Please Login to Remove!

hi

according to:
New BlackBerry Bold Touch Screen Phones Specifications on their site the 9900 has the following networks:

# 9900:
# UMTS: 2100/1900/850/800 MHz or 2100/1700/900 MHz
# GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900
# HSDPA: 14.4 Mbps
# HSUPA: 5.76 Mbps

what does this "or" mean in the UMTS description?
a) does it have both
b) just one of both?

my principle requirements would be:
- works in the US
- works in switzerland
- works in japan
- works on south korea

..so, is the 9900 the right mobile for me?

The different UMTS bands are for different carrier's 3G bands. There will be a T-Mobile version sporting the 2100/1700 frequency and a version for AT&T and the rest of the GSM world using 2100/1900/850/800.

The second one should work everywhere but Korea. It *might* work there but no guarantees. Korea has it's own hybrid frequency for cell phones.

Japan also has been problematic for BBs and other cell devices. Typically, you need a phone from a Japanese carrier, but I think that has evolved and might not be as big an issue any longer. Need to chat with people who regularly go where you travel and see which device they use.

Here's the straight talk on Japan and Korea from my personal experience:

Either version a of a given UMTS BlackBerry device (1700/2100/900 for T-Mobile USA et al. or 850/900/1900/2100 for AT&T et al.) will function in both Korea and Japan for roaming purposes.

Now, seeing that Orange is your provider, you are in Europe or the UK, so the only model that will even be available to you will be the one with 850/900/1900/2100, so you won't even have to worry about making a choice, and as long as your provider has a data roaming agreement with providers in those countries, your device will work.
