Very interesting-as the article points out in it's lead, the carriers appear to be looking for ways to dent the landline market. It will be very interesting to see down the road whether UMA or femtocells emerge as a clear cut superior technology-or if another "booster" type technology emerges.

But what is killing me is they are getting the consumer to PAY for it! Pac Bell and ATT had to eat the cost of cabling everyones home!

That will only last for a while-keep in mind, if consumers don't like the cost, they can always go back to landline.

The very folks that Femtocells will most help, are SOL. Face it, if you are so far from a cell tower that you don't have a good signal, the chances are that you are beyond the reach of DSL and Cable also.

I'm 5 miles from the phone switch. Unless they put a DSLAM in the junction box in my driveway, DSL will never be here. I'm also 3 miles from the end of the cable line. Jetbroadband mumbled something about the next 12th of Juvember after Hell freezes over before they extend the cable line.

So, I'm on a satellite Internet connection. VOIP is very, very poor over satellite due to the latency issue. (Minimum ping time is in the order of 650ms or greater.) A femtocell repeater connected to my WIFI would be useless.

Less than 40% of US citizens are connected to broadband.

Femtocells still have a long way to go before they will be used in the typical home. Still so many issues with things like seamless roaming from tower to femtocell without losing the call, securing your home cell network from your neighbor jumping on yours, etc. Doesn't matter to me anyhow as I have a great signal everywhere in my house.

UMA is--IMO--a better solution.
