Default Will a SIM from an I930 work in a 7520?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

Noob Blackberry user here.

I just bought a 7520 w/o a SIM.
I have a Nextel i930. The i930 SIM wakes up service on the 7520. But will I be missing features by not using a Blackberry SIM?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I think I'm really going to like the switch to a Blackberry. I absolutely hated the i930 and it's crippled Windows Mobile OS.

Since your Nextel SIM works in the BB, I assume it is a Nextel device?

To get the full use of the the BB, you really need to get it properly provisioned by your carrier and you need a BB dataplan. No BB dataplan, no push email and only limited Internet capability with a 3rd party browser such as OperaMini.

There is no specific SIM for a BB. As Dubdub said, without a BB data plan your service is very limited. Sprint/Nextel offers a data plan at reasonable cost. I would suggest an unlimited plan in any event to keep costs at the expected level. It is too easy to exceed the limited plans.

Thanks Dbudub and tsac.
That's exactly what I needed to know.
I'll call my provider and get a plan.
I just wanted verification before I was sold some "goods."

What a hoot! The gal, Jennifer, at the Sprint/Nextel service number say the SIM card from my i930 is too "strong" for the 7520. I said; "Well, it seems to be working." She said; "Well it's too strong for the Blackberry and eventually some things will stop working, you'll need to get a new SIM card."

Okay. Back to eBay. I don't give up easily.

Still, thanks for the help.

You can use the i930 SIM on the BB. The rep you talked to does not know what she is talking about. You may have some minor browser issues, but it should not impact your Blackberry experience significantly (you may not even notice).

I would just call Nextel (er Sprint) and make sure you have the Blackberry service plan provisioned properly on the device.

FYI, many moons ago I did the same thing and had no issues.

i also back when used the sims for many nextel phones with no issue. I agree with the folks that you need a Blackberry data plan to have email, internet, etc.

The only thing about the SIM is the minimum should be a 64k SIM. Older BB's used 32 K and there were some issues on the new ones. I wonder why the rep did not just send you a new SIM. When you do go for a plan I would ask for a new SIM ( for free ) and let them know the other carriers will be glad to take your service. The SIM cost about
$0.15 cents.

Correct and the i930 can only use a 64k or better so you should be good.

actually the 930 sim card will burn the 7520 up. The 7520 uses a 32k sim I know this from first hand experience. I burnt two of them up before figuring out the problem. But do what ever you feel is right. Id put the insurance on it so you can swap it out when you burn it up.

Hmmm....

Well, I got a couple of BB SIM cards from a buddy who got them with a phone he purchased on ebay. I also found a Nextel rep who knows what he's doing. He got my phone provisioned with one of the BB SIMS. BTW he said that the i930 SIM would probably work but that some features would not work or may stop working after a while.

Now I have a different problem. The SIM that's in the phone still has a different phone number. I mean my phone works fine, used my number, has push email and etc. But the Phone display shows My Number as the old SIM user's number. Options-->Advanced Options-->SIM Card displays the incorrect number.

This only bothers me because the display is incorrect. I haven't found any other drawback.

My question is how can I program the correct number on the SIM Card -or- change the number that's displayed on the Phone screen?

Ah, I found the rub...

Seems that if I select Call Voice Mail, the thing tries to dial the number on the SIM.

So, I guess I'll have to call my Nextel guy and get it straightened out.

Thanks for the hand-holding while I'm crawling up the BB learning ladder.

Still, I gotta say that I'm going to love this BB thing as much as I hated the I930's crippled Windows Mobile!

Last post for this...

Just FYI, after two days the 7520 is now displaying the correct number on the My Number display and the SIM now has the correct number as well. I guess it just pays to be a little patient.

Thanks for all the help.

Now I'm off to the BES forums to get two-way calendar sync working!

In the future, if this happens again just call yourself from another phone and leave an urgent voicemail. I know it sounds weird, but it works for Nextel devices that are doing what you described.
