Default Facebook application uploads phone book - Privacy Concerns

Please Login to Remove!

Reports are coming down the pipe indicating that the Facebook application was recently updated and now will automatically upload the address book from the user's Blackberry to Facebook. The application then pulls down pictures of your contacts from Facebook. Facebook will keep the users address book for two years. This has privacy and security concerns for many users.

If anyone has any further information on this please share.

If you're really that concerned about privacy, then you shouldn't be using Facebook.

The application is configurable to be able to choose what it can and can not do with the Face Book site.

Amen again to that. You CAN configure what you will share in your accout options panel in Facebook. Why anyone would join a 'social network' and be concerned with privacy is beyond me.

There is no such thing as real privacy nowadays and we had better get used to it.

I have the application. It very simply informs you of what it intends to do, how it intends to do it, and how to opt out of it before it does ANYTHING of the sort. Nothing to see here.

well, that means first of all that facebook will have the all the bb´s contact data.
your business contacts.
and then they might have the right to email them and say things like
duane534 has invited you to facebook

do you really want that happening with all your BB contacts?

Are you serious? Really? Just turn off the phonebook integration. Turn off the calendar integration. Turn off the e-mail integration. Fixed. Your privacy (or what you misunderstand your privacy to be) is intact.

Or better yet... unplug that phone, turn off that computer, and pull the blinds closed. Someone might see you!

Default You call that a response?

Wow, I wasn't aware we had so many BB users living outside planet earth that have nothing more to say than mere rant and barely comprehendable bleeps of vowels and consonants. HELLLOOOO!

For those of you just returning from your trip across a galaxy far, far away most people wouldn't even know the consequences of uploading a phone book or give it a second thought. Case in point, read your answers. Considering the potential information that could be stored in one's phone book (email, multiple phone numbers, pictures, job title, work address, home address, birthday, etc), uploading this information to a social networking site such as Facebook poses a real threat to YOUR right to privacy. The fact is corporations are quietly infringing upon your (and everyone listed in that phone book) right to privacy in the name of profit. Privacy is protected under countless statues and laws in most countries. The principles of least privilege should apply to all cases of privacy. Uploading a phone book should not be automatic by default, expecially to a social networking site.

Very impressive forum you have here kids! A lot of intelligence for sure.

I understand this was sarcasm on your part, but this is a completely true statement. The wealth of knowledge found on this forum is very impressive. Look around other threads and I am sure you will see that.

Hence why you have the option of turning all of those things off after installing the facebook app.
