Question Tour, desktop manager 5 and no sync

Please Login to Remove!

I am a newbie to Blackberries. Just got the tour. Like the phone but I can not get it to synch with my Outlook data at home or at work. I get the dreaded "Computer must be connected to the Internet" error. The desktop software updates to the internet fine. I can load music to the phone. But when I go to synch Outlook and the phone I get the above error.

I have searched the archives and found the problems with v4.3-4.7 of desktop manager but haven't found any info on 5.0 which is what claims to be on my system. I even downloaded a newer version to the pc without success. I also tried 4.2 but it would not recognize the tour when it was connected.

I have found a item on Rim's website indicating it could be a firewall issue. I put my pc outside of the router as a direct connect to the internet. No luck. Also deactivated the on board firewall and ad-aware software with no luck.

The folks at the office tried also without luck.

Am not connecting via BES, just direct connect to Outlook.

Any other suggestions?

Wirelessly posted (White and Nerdy)

Also, do you have a data plan? Because if you do, you can just add the account to the BIS email and not even need an outlook sync

The user is on Verizon, so yes, they have a data plan.

Huh? Then how are they going to get their Outlook PIM data to the device?

I have outlook 2003 at work and I believe the same at home.

I do have a data plan. Getting email directly isn't the issue. I have hundreds of contacts and a lot of schedule info in Outlook that I really need on the phone. Tired of carrying 1 phone for that info and 1 phone to talk on. Reminds me when I used to have a PDA and a dumb phone. I don't want to go back to that now.

I do hope some one out there has a solution for me.

Thanks!

I was about to state how easily all my contacts switched over when I realized that I am still using BlackBerry Desktop software 4.7, maybe you should downgrade. I switched from the Nextel Curve to the Sprint Tour effortlessly. I have a few thousand contacts and they all transferred fine.

The people at work got it working by connecting my pc directly to the internet bypassing the proxy servers and other security issues.

Unfortunately I have been unable to make this work at home since when I connect my pc outside of the router it and the cox network won't work together. Still tussling with this and unfortunately I am not sure where to look for an answer on this part. Even when I manually enter my ip address into the pc I still have little to no connectivity. I am sure that if I could get that fixed it would then work.

Thanks for your help folks!

What issues are you having, you need to connect the PC to the internet at least for the first time so the BB software can sync.

If your old phone is on Verizon, they should be able to transfer the contacts for you, but that won't help the calendar issue.

Are you saying you can't conntect to the internet at all on your computer, or just Desktop Manager can't connect?

Desktop Manager can't connect. At work, we had to bypass the routers and proxyservers to get it to connect. It was suggested to do that at home but when I bypass the server, my pc doesn't see the internet although it has no trouble when going through the router.

What security software do you have on the computer? It sounds like something could be blocking it.

Does the router belong to you or your ISP? What kind of internet connection is it? Cable, dsl, or ?

This could be as simple as de-installing DM 5.0 and re-installing DM 4.7

I never got 5.0 to work properly on my Tour, un-intalled 5.0 and switched to DM 4.7 and everything has been great ever since!
