Mayor drops plan to pay home buyers' credit bills | Front page | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Looks like there was a plan to give people tax money to pay off credit cards and loans so they could qualify for home loans. Hard to believe there was a little controversy about the plan. So it's been dropped. How did anyone come up with this idea in the first place?

"Mayor Bill White this afternoon announced that a plan for the city to pay off some debts for first-time home buyers has been pulled from tomorrow's City Council agenda.

Council members are now professing their "embarrassment" about the proposal, which has hit the national news circuit, including drudgereport.com., which picked up this morning's Houston Chronicle story about the plan

"This issue has hit a nerve across this country," said Councilwoman Anne Clutterbuck. "Not just here in the city of Houston. Giving people the ability to increase their credit score artificially because we're allowing them to pay off their credit cards is exactly what got us into this (national economic) crisis in the first place..."

'Council members are now professing their embarrassment'. I'd say they have every reason to be embarrassed. And should be voted out of office at the next opportunity.

The politicians down here are no better than the Yankee variety. They will say anything to get themselves elected to a higher office. In the case of the mayor he is running for governer if I remember. A couple more press releases like this and he will be running for the border.
