Default Silly question.

I am wondering, if I were to buy a Sprint 8830, would I be able to flash it with say, alltel's OS and use it on alltel? If I can do this, how would I go about doing it?

Welcome to the forums.

You can follow these steps to upgrade your OS:

How do I upgrade the OS on my BlackBerry? - BlackBerryFAQ.com

However, you will still need to use the device on the Sprint network. CDMA devices cannot be used on other CDMA networks.

No no, what he's wondering is if he can take the Sprint (CDMA) 8830 and flash it with the Alltel (CDMA) upgrade for the 8830. It would be nice to know if you can take one BB from one CDMA carrier and use it with another CDMA carrier's software on it.

Silly me, I thought he wanted to use a Sprint device on the Alltel network.

And yes, you can upgrade a device with a different carrier's OS. I was using the Alltel OS on my Sprint 8130. Works like a charm.

Just have to use the OS for your network (can't use CDMA OS on GSM device, for example).

Check w alltel if they will allow a sprint phone on their network. You can pretty much install any carriers os as long as its for that model / system (gsm/cdma) the part that is tricky is will a carrier allow a different carriers phone.

they will, i used to work for them and i've used VZW phone's on the network...if you go into the Alltel store normally they wont let you activate it because it's another networks...but there are ways around that...either by calling, or telling them you ended up buying a parts phone and had to get it from a different carrier and thats why it says its a "sprint or vzw" phone...or if your friends with one of the reps hehe

You can, but there are some caveats. Namely, you'll need to be sure the device is unlocked, or has the ability to become so. To do that, you'll need to have it either unlocked when purchased, obtain the MSL code from Sprint, or go through "other" means to obtain it (web sites, online services, etc).

Next, you'll need to get Alltel to assent to having the device on their network. While the GSM world is fairly open, with the network identity of a device being carried around on the SIM card, in the CDMA world, the identity of a phone is carried on the device itself. There are ways, as alluded to previously, of getting the necessary information out of a CSR. If you can get access to the programming section of an Alltel device you want to clone, you may be able to sidestep the CSR, but you'd need to have that Alltel device unlocked via the MSL code to do so.

You don't need firmware from a carrier to run on their network. I'm running Singapore firmware on my AT&T 8820.
