can a UK BES be used with a foreign carrier?
Please Login to Remove!
I will be moving to Hong Kong from the UK and intend to get a blackberry on a Hong Kong carrier.
Can I use our UK BES server if i'm not with a UK carrier any more?
If not, I can use the email forwarding arrangement on the Blackberry, but would rather not lose the calendar sync as I would miss it.
Thanks

As long as your UK BES can activate your BB over the air you should be fine; discuss their requirements with them. Make sure that you have the right data plan in Hong Kong.

Activating over the air is not a requirement. Devices can be activated from a computer that is connected via VPN.

BlackBerry's are independant of the carrier, as long as you have the BlackBerry Enterprise package on your mobile account, and the OK from your IT dept, then that's all you'll need.

I am assuming your mail is staying in the UK and not moving to a more local, to you, server.

I assume you may have to get a new SRP ID for your new carrier from RIM.

No You do KNOT!
Please don't assume, get the facts.
SRP has nothing to do with it.
BES only cares about correct data plan is set for BES on HH and knot have BIS on it.
It does knot care about what carrier you use, I have 11 diff carriers on my BES right now with original SRP.

As long as your sim has BES enabled on it, it does not matter what part of the world you are in and where your BES server is located - it just works!

I don't think so, but he does give pretty good advice even if his spelling of the word "knot" is often a bit annoying.

Thanks guys, we sometimes do knot know how much we are appreciated when we have helped others out sometimes. It's nice that you took the time to tell us and my Friday is looking even better now. Hope you all have a nice weekend.

Why, did you want to buy it?
He was right and you were wrong, let's all be friends and move on. We always welcome new members and new contributions but you really can't assume stuff and post it to help others, they are looking for hard facts or seriously well-educated guesses.

Ditto what knotty said, thanks voda_black! We rarely get thanks, just complaints that we aren't fast enough/giving the answer people want to hear. People really do think some of us work for RIM, scary

Indeed, you have two choices when in Hong Kong
- Use you UK SIM, which will just work but you'll be paying roaming data charges
- Use Hong Kong operator's SIM, but then that Hong Kong operator has also to support RIM services locally, which enable the 'link' to your BES in the UK...
What I DON'T think will work, is bunging some local-to-Hong Kong operator's SIM in your BB with a normal data plan on it. It won't connect to *any* RIM service locally or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

Respect is earned on this site, Knottyrope has my vote.
We have people from all over the globe on one BES. They get their SIM cards locally, ensure it is BES, not BIS, and activate as per normal (wired or otherwise). Mailboxes are based both at the same location as the BES, or local to the user, no real difference for us apart from some time-lag.
