DM for Mac is not my homeboy-advice needed

I got a replacement 9700 about a week ago, updated my software and did a device switch using windows.
Everytime I try to back up my device with DM for mac, it erases the device data. It acts like it's backing up the software, but when it's finished, it's like a fresh out of the box device. All my numbers and contacts are gone and I have to restore from the original backup I made a week ago.
The first time it happened, I called AT&T and got the run around. They wanted me to take the device back to the store I got it from (device repair center) and have it replaced. I really don't want to go back there-it's not that close and the device works flawlessly outside of this.
I just don't think this is a hardware issue, but I'm getting pretty tired of not being able to back up using DM for mac without losing everything.
So I'm wondering if:
1. outside of the steps I've taken (remove blackberry protect, dropping to the stock OS, reinstalling DM for mac) is there anything else I could be doing?
2. would bricking my bb (with J_L Cmdr) and bringing it back to life leave a blank enough slate to reinstall everything and have it work properly?
Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.
