Primarily, unlocking allows you to acticate a device sold by one carrier on another carrier's network. There are limitations, however:

1. To emphasize a point made in a previous post, you are still subject to all of the rate plan and feature pricing that your carrier of choice charges.

2. The device must be compatable with the technology used by your carrier of choice. Amongst the major U.S. carriers, Verizon and Sprint use CDMA technology, ATT and T-Mobile use GSM technology. A CDMA device won't work on a GSM carrier's network, and vice-versa.

The Storm actually has capabilities to work on both CDMA and GSM, so an unlocked Storm could in fact cross over, with some additional steps after unlocking.

The caveat is that the major CDMA providers don't activate devices from other CDMA providers.

They pretty much answered it. Also, slightly higher resale value because you can reach a broader audience.

NOPE!

When you unlock your phone you can use other carriers. If you want to unlock your phone for free, I made a video about it. Hope it helps!

BUT it is free to unlock your phone!

If you don't believe me, just check out my Blackberry Unlock video. It's first in my list of videos. It is very popular, but originally I had my phone number in the video! I had to remake it.

It's "free" if your carrier will give you the code. Not all of them will.
