Default What Would Make BlackBerry Better?

Please Login to Remove!

Serious answers only, please. This can be for the devices, the OS, feature-add applications, BlackBerry Enterprise Server, BlackBerry Internet Service, etc. I am going to write an article on your opinions and suggestions for my upcoming blog column and forward the realistic/good suggestions to RIM. Please do not include ideas for legacy devices that simply don't have the hardware expandability built-in for implementation (such as removeable storage in a 8700g, or any other BlackBerry that's not a Pearl or newer). These are to be realistic wish-lists and suggestions.

Mine personal opinions are:

xxx8226; Feature-add: Full-featured Office application for editing documents on the device (a lot of work needs to be done to the current document viewer, as well)
xxx8226; Feature-add: Unified IM application (although I suppose individual AIM, MSN clients should be released first)
xxx8226; BES: Web-based thin-client for management with all the features of desktop-based BlackBerry Manager (planned for post-BES 5.0; previous suggestion of mine)
xxx8226; OS: The ability to add a Email Filter (not a Category Filter) from within the Address Book / Contact. Seems like a logical inclusion that doesn't appear to be there (unless I'm just overlooking it).

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8703e/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

Deff document viewing and editing programming w/o the need to purchase a subscription to do so.

Removable storage which would allow for data exchange w/o the need to sync.

These are already realities with the Pearl and the 8800 (8900).

The following suggestions are not any Earth shattering inventions but just from the complaints I've seen on here.

1. A way to "sync" emails prior to new activation on BES or BIS.
2. Ability to separate out SMS/MMS and BIS mail from "Messages" folder if desired (mainly BES use.)
3. (This one probably doesn't even need saying but...)Bring back the ability to disable automatic backlight dimming (on 4.2 devices.)

I'll remember more and post back when I'm not sitting forcing myself to remember it all at once.

.vcs and .vcf Import/Export capability

Dual SMS/Email send utility that auto-detects what the user is attempting by what is typed ie - phone number or email addy.

To: fields auto-selection based on either name or phone number or email address entered.

Revert to larger keyboards on QWERTY models.

Thanks for putting that. I have amended my original post with a bit more detail as to legacy devices and suggestions for them.

OS 4.2.1 will atleast allow you to separate SMS/MMS from the Messages folder with a user option - no longer theme dependent. That's a step in the right direction...

That's good to hear...and I'm big on the "if desired." I'd like to have a setting to be able to say, "list BIS messages (or SMS/MMS) in Message folder=yes/no" or something to that effect.

I'd like to see some sort of workable file manager, for easier transfer of such things as backgrounds, ringtones, photos... Not that I do this very often, but it's hard work when I have to (was stunned as a newbie when I found I had to e-mail my own photos to myself to show them on the BB, or purchase additional software like SplashPhoto).

Again, with v4.2 of the handheld OS and the Desktop Manager, the Media Manager option allows you to move ringtones and photos very easily between the device and your PC.

Love to see HTML rendering in email. The ability to turn it on and off would be a plus.

My favorite bugbear, more control over backlight settings.

Bluetooth stereo. I'm not clear as to whether the 8100 has the hardware capability built in to support this in the current generation.

Device reset, without a battery pull. I don't like excessive wear and tear on the flimsy cover tabs.

BTW, thanks for the opportunity.

Fully integrated spell check that runs automatically.

Better calendar/scheduling application

Integrated and customizable home screen to show missed calls, appointments, email, signal, time and battery strength, etc.

I find fault not so much with the BB itself (8703e) but with the BB OS. We desperately need increased PIM capabilities which, in my opinion, are essential if one is to put away their Palm of Pocket PC and go strictly with the BB.

Camera, GPS

Other than that, I would like to see my blackberry (BIS) being able to sync with google over the air. And not just calender and email but everything as a replacement for Microsoft Outlook.(Calender, contacts, tasks, memo pad)

Also, I would like to be able to access google spreadsheet thru my phone thru some application like Gmail for Mobile.

Third, I would like it bundled up in a package like Yahoo GO! or something like that which also includes weather, RSS feeds, messenger etc.

Care to share some details of these increased capabilities?

Both are included in either current or soon-to-be-released versions of the devices. GPS is on all iDEN devices, as well as the 8703e. It will be included in the 8800 for GSM devices. Camera is on the Pearl and the 2nd of the 8800 releases.

This would be a suggestion for Google not RIM, unfortunately. It would be a nice feature.
