Hi Folks,

I just received my "Javelin" today. I really like the small footprint. But there is one thing I really don't like (and don't understand).

When I use the same Font on the 8900 as on the Bold (like BBAlpha Sans 7) there is less text shown on the 8900 screen than on the Bold. But it's the same font and font size?!

Maybe the BBAlpha Sans 7 ist bigger on the 8900 since the screen is smaller - but I want RIM to offer a font size 6 or something like that.

Is there a patch or something?

O called customer service and they have them already for Hardware Upgrade at $179.99 on a 3yr contract, they said I should have by Friday

Wohoo... Expensive. I always thought we pay the highest prices around here in Germany.

It was around 35$ with an 2yr contract upgrade.

But I want font size 6 or 5. Isn't there a hack or something?

PS: Beware: Once inserted you'll never get your MicroSD out of the Javelin. I don't know who is responsible for this damn design at RIM - but it killed two 8 GB SDHC allready (mine - bought yesterday - broke in two parts while trying to get it out the slot - and I'm used to such tiny card fiddlings). The other one just broke "internally" (since silicon is harder than the outer plastics).

I don't think there is any hack or anything to get a smaller text size, or at least I haven't seen one.

The only thing I can think of, is that the Bold and 8900 do not have the same screen resolution. I believe the 8900 is 480x360 as opposed to 480x320.

The physical screen size has nothing to do with the resolution. The Bold has 480 x 320 pixels. The Curve 8900 has 480 x 360 pixels.

So if the font sizes were exactly the same (eg. a letter is 6 pix wide and 8 pix high) there should be exactly the same number of letters in a row PLUS some additional rows on the Curve.

But there are less letters in a row. So font size 7 on Bold resembles a smaller letter pixelwise than on the Curve with font size 7.

I'll do some screenshots the as soon as I'm back home.

This makes sense to me. The physical size of the screen shouldn't matter. Because the screens have the same number of pixels across, they should display the same number of characters I would think. Now, the Curve's letters will appear smaller, but it should contain the same quantity of information across the screen regardless of the physical size.

I'm sorry I can't help you because I have a bold, but it makes sense it should be the same.

Hi Folks,

here is the proof.

I took the same screenshot of both devices (Options -> Memory) set to the same font "BBAlpha Sans", Size 7.

The letters on the Curve are actually bigger even though both devices are set to the same font and fontsize.

Does anyone have anymore information about this? It drives me nuts that I have less text in one row on the new curve compared to bold. They both have same horizantal resolution, so it should be the exact same when comparing the same font size?

I called RIM and they were clueless.

I dont understand how this doesnt bother more people. The amount of text per line is important. And to lose some compared to bold even though the horizontal resolution is the same does not make any sense!!!!

Well I never had a Bold to compare it to, so I'm not 'losing' anything. The amount of text per line I feel is not important. If it's such a big deal, just pop your SIM back in your Bold.

Try changing the font (not the size) and play around with that. I heard that the 8900 renders some fonts bigger than other phones for some reason.

I have my font set to 7, would like an option for a 6, maybe a 5.

Maybe it's a theme setting or something different about how the Curve handles fonts. I don't know but size 7 on the Bold looks pretty good (but it's small - I wouldn't want any smaller). RIM should know...too bad they don't.

I don't know if this works the same on the BB (it probably does though), but this is an example of how it works in Photoshop. The resolution of the Javelin probably has more pixels/inch because of the smaller screen and I am guessing the size 7 on the BB means a 7pt font, which behaves differently depending on the pixels/inch

I don't know what the exact pixels/inch of the Javelin and the Bold, but I will use an example below:

Let's say the Bold is 480x320 at 72 pixels/inch and the font is a 24pt font.

If the Javelin is 480x360 at 96 pixels/inch. This affects the font size. To match the Bold's 24pt font size on the screen, you would have to use an 18pt font on the Javelin. When you change it to 24pt font, it becomes bigger.

If I made it 144 pixels/inch for the Javelin, the font size on the Javelin would have to be 12 to look the same size as the 24pt font on the Bold.

Not exactly the most technical or probably easiest to understand explanation, but hopefully that gives people an idea that just having the same pixel dimensions isn't the only factor in the size of the font.
