The article also mentions that Blackberry OS 7 would be a stepping stone to QNX and since we just got OS 6 on 1 official device I would expect to see QNX in late 2012 or Early 2013 based on the time line between OS 5 and 6.

So near future hardly.

Hardly. Not even worth speculating.. We haven't even seen Os6 for 9700, right...

makes sense to me to put out the OS6 for 9700 at the same time or very shortly after the launch of the 9780, which is coming in the next two weeks. Otherwise they're gonna piss off pretty much all the 9700 users and there's plenty of them.

Would it be possible for you to ask this friend working at RIM if they know about the availability of the OS6 with Orange UK any rough timeline would be greatly appreciated

I want OS6 NOW on my 9700. And, if RIM does not deliver I will ....uhm.... put my head in a bucket of water. Maybe, then, they have mercy for me?

Maybe you'll have better luck threatening to put your 9700 in a bucket of water?

right, this is the near perfect solution. Then I could get a brand new 9800 (but it is not sold in europe).

Personally I'd rather the hardware improvements with the 9780 - yet I previously owned the 9700 and love that device. The 9700 is hands down THE BEST phone/smartphone I've EVER owned - and only 1 other device captured my elation that much and it was a LONG time ago - Ericsson T36M (Nokia E71 gets honorable short-term mention).

Don't worry your accessories will play nice and keep the 9700 as a great fallback device for die in the rough handling.

Nope. Saw several RIM folks at a large IT conference this week and they had no information to share.

Availability of a given OS is based on the devices not the providers.

Really? RIM writes the code and sends it to the carriers to test and certify. Then the carriers release it.

I actually Work for Rogers BB and Rim releases the software it is up to the carrier to say it works with there networks configuration or not. the provider is just that they provide the services not the software. we just create a porting tool as per agreement with RIM
