Default Does Verizon Block GPS?

Please Login to Remove!

I have an 8330 with VZ as the carrier. I was on an OS of 4.3 for quite some time and the GPS never worked. A friend at the same company told me his was working with the 4.5 OS.

I upgraded to the multi lang. 4.5.0.122 the other day and the GPS was working great. It worked in the house, car with no drops or issues until I did an enterprise activation.

After I activated I loaded BB maps and verified that the GPS linked up and it did. A little later I noticed the activation icon was present again and it was synching services. After that the GPS quit, any ideas?

Thanks

Not anymore. I read that at the end of last year it was unblocked.
I don't have an issue with BB Maps and I am on 4.5.0.77

Default GPS Is Working now.

I re-registered a couple times and did a *22899 and it is working again. I dunno perhaps a service book didn't synch. right when I activated it.

Wow, I definitely haven't been keeping up with all of this stuff. I remember talk about VZW not blocking GPS anymore, but I didn't know it actually happened. After I read your post I opened BBMaps and it got a signal but it just keeps switching to "Searching For Satellites" every time it finds my location. I'll have to mess with it more when I'm not at work...lol

Yeah, you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky and preferably stationary for the first lock. And it may take a while the first time you get a satellite lock.

I was outside in the vehicle when this was happening, also tried holding it out the window. It finds me, then almost immediately switches back to "Searching for satellites..." I have not tried resending service books or a battery pull or anything yet, as my phone must remain on right now.

It won't give you turn by turn with voice prompts, but it will fix your location on BBmaps. You'll still need VZnavigator for turn by turn.

Do you have a metalized coating on the windows of your vehicle?

I have an 8330 and the GPS works great in my car. Inside my house I can't get a signal which is ok because if I am in my house I already know where I am.
It does a nice job in my car which is where I want it to work.

First off, *22899 is for data devices without voice, so use *228.

And your IT department may have done something with the policy sent to your device that may be giving you trouble.. not likely, but possible.

Verizon unlocked the Curve 8330 GPS to Blackberry Maps only.

The Storm, as far as I know, is the only fully unlocked GPS Blackberry from Verizon.

Fingers crossed any future BBs are fully unlocked but with VZW, who knows.

Verizon has not unlocked the curve for GPS with google at least. If anyone in here thinks that even the lowest grade gps wont get them within 1500' is on crack. It does however work with blackberry maps, but still a crock. Verizon is a bastard company and since they now offer friends and family I can get the hell of that network

Wirelessly posted (BB Curve XRR0)

Yeah, it's great that BB Maps can locate me using GPS - except that my 3-year-old neighborhood still ISN'T on their maps. And don't even get me started on Google Maps. But Lo and Behold, Live Search not only has my neighborhood mapped, they even have a satellite photo with my car in front of the house.

Now if I could just pursuade VZW to unlock my GPS for LiveSearch, I'd be golden.
