Thumbs up AT&T 8300 with XM Radio Mobile (streaming music)

Please Login to Remove!

I received two 8300s this morning and what a surprise, they both came with XM Radio Mobile pre-installed. You can demo the service for three days and then sign up @ $8.99 per month.

Genres:
Preview
Pop, Hits & Dance
Rock
Decades
Country
Hip Hop & Urban
Jazz & Blues
Latin
Rock

You are warned a couple of times about having an unlimited data plan to use it probably because it streams over EDGE.

Sound quality is on par with music streamed over the Internet. A plus with the 8300 is the ability to plug in standard 3.5mm headphones.

Very nice! I don't recall reading that as an option before.

Default MusicID

Yep, I didn't see XM Radio Mobile mentioned anywhere so it was a nice surprise.

There is also a music ID service called MusicID:

Ever want to know what song you're hearing?
Now you can with MusicID from AT&T. From hip hop to country, rock, classical, show tunes and more, MusicID can identify thousands of recorded songs.

When you hear a song, just dial #43.
Hold your AT&T phone up to the speaker for about 15 seconds, then end the call.
You'll soon receive a text message telling you the name of the song.

Neat but don't know how often I would use it:

ATT 8820's have it on there as well. Cant imagine any real point however. At least with the 8820 it has WIFI and thus might actually stream decent.

damn! I wanted to get sirius on there!

Is that a possibility? Still gonna wait for the 2nd generation of this little bugger. The 1st gen is ALWAYS loaded with poor manufacturer defects.

It's the icon that looks like a small radio with musical notes coming out of it, titled XM Radio Mobile.

If you are using the default theme, look for the musical note icon called AT&T Music, which is a folder, and click on it to view all of the music apps.

I clicked on the little radio thing. And I had to go through a few screens to download the app for XM radio for the 3 day trial. The display on this phone is awsome!

Just downloaded the XM APP. I have unlimited data and EDGE signal. It's been sitting at the title screen for about five minutes, doing nothing. Tried a battery pull but so far, just a nice yellow on black title screen. No music.

Edited to read: Okay, got it. It's a pay-by-the-month deal. Even if you subscribe to XM already it seems this app wants you to pay again, just to use it on the BB. No sale, here.

You should be able to press the BB menu button which will pull up a 'continue' option.

$8.99 is steep. WM devices let you stream the full catalog of either XM or Sirius so long as you are a Sat radio subscriber.

Angry Buy, Buy, Buy the SAME Product!

So in theory, XM wants you to buy:

$12.95 - "Traditional" Satellite Service for Your Car/Handheld Satellite Receiver
$7.99 - "XM Radio Online" for the privilege to listen to the SAME channels you are already paying monthly for above, while at your computer
$8.99 - "XM Mobile" for the privilege to listen to the SAME channels you are already paying TWICE monthly for above, while not at your computer, in your car, or with your handheld satellite receiver (which would be where, exactly?)

I'm an XM subscriber, with online XM on my PC or Mac at no additional charge. On my Treo 700p on Sprint or the Samsung Blackjack I could use the browser to log into musicdock.com and log into my online XM account, and it worked well. On the BB 8800 or 8300, I tried it, got logged in just fine, but the BB's media player throws a media format error. Oh well, at least push email is more important to me!
