Default Blackberry 9000 BOLD & GPS? Anyone know?

Please Login to Remove!

Does anyone know if the Blackberry 9000 BOLD will have multi destination input for their GPS? If not is there any third party companies which will have this? Will the GPS on the BOLD speak directions to you?

Or does any of the last models have this feature? I am going to get this phone when it comes out and I need a GPS unit so if the phone will do this then I have save some bucks!!

Thanks!

BlackBerry Maps, which is the software RIM releases with their GPS hardware, will not have turn-by-turn directions. You would need to go with software from Garmin or TeleNav for this functionality. I think your ideas behind GPS are a bit confused... the GPS chipset companies and even the mapping data companies provide the tools necessary for software companies to do what they need, whether it be multi-destination, turn-by-turn voice navigation, etc.

The GPS in the bold is the satellite receiver hardware part of it - the antenna & hardware necessary to derive your location from the constellation of satellites. You still need an application to make frther use of that data, from knowing where you are to showing where you are to mapping to navigating.

Phones that have a gps "chip" merely are capable of getting data from the satellites that are stationed above the earth. It is then up to software applications to make use of that data. It can be as simple as showing latitude and longitude and nothing more - lat/long are pretty obscure but many people were able to figure out where they were with just those two values.

More sophisticated, the software can draw maps, show you where you are located on those maps, show surrounding uses, plot a route between places. Some can "speak" and other just show visual cues. Some speak very detailed info and others just say turn in 200 feet but don't mentioned the street. All of these features are provided by the software using the data that the gps provides.

There are freeware and commercial software/programs/applications you can get.

Check out the gps subforum.

...and some can lock up your device and make you cry 'mommy!'

It's a pretty common misunderstanding. There are no built-in GPS apps or functionality on the BB (well, BB Maps comes with some carriers). All you get is positioning data (i.e. latitude and longitude) from the receiver. Everything else is dependent of the GPS app that you decide to use with your BB.

It's like on a PC. I think you're thinking of the BB's GPS functionality like a stand-alone device like a Garmin, TomTom etc.

The Bold won't do any of the things that you're asking about out-of-the-box (just like any GPS-equipped BB available right now). You really need to specify the GPS app that you're thinking of using with the Bold.

I highly recommend reading up in the GPS forum.
