Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8310/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

I have used it since I got the phone and really like it. Sometimes you need to see full page. I have heard of problems froms others but I haven't yet. If u don't like it yopu can always remove it.

Opera Mini is definitely the way to go. Make sure you learn the shortcuts, too, as that improves the overall usability.

I use Opera Mini almost exclusively unless I am doing an OTA download for a theme, app or ringtone...then the stock BB browser works best for me.

Opera Mini ftw! It truly provides a desktop browsing experience for your BB like Safari does for iPhone.

Hints:

- Navigate faster using E,S,X,F,D. Let me explain: its the number pad, 2/8 for up/down, 4/6 for left/right. MUCH FASTER than the scroll ball! Also hit 5 for ZOOM in/out. Notice how moving left/right this way causes Opera to line up to columns on the page?

(The above hint is probably the single biggest usability improvement. Those who didn't quite like Opera Mini at first, myself included, will be surprised at how much better it becomes with the faster navigation)

- use font size small. I don't know why but this is rendered so much better than the other sizes.

- uncheck mobile view, check all 3 items under "appearance"

- Use the Curve/Pearl's "escape" key (the button to the right of the scroll ball). It unzooms (if zoomed) or navigates to the previous page.

- Opera can make a quicksearch from any page! Example: Go to maps.google.com, place the cursor over the search field and hit the BB Menu key (left of ball). Create Search. Now you can search from the Opera start page, queries such as "pizza 10101" or "10101 to 90210" for directions. I added eBay, Amazon, Answers.com, Wikipedia, Froogle, Cosctco, Home Depot, and a ton more that help me all the time.

- You can get rid of the annoying prompt on startup - the prompt about allowing Opera to access this or that. Go into your blackberry's Options > Security > Firewall > Enable. I now have this always enabled and it works with every application I use and everything I have installed. Once you grant something access thru the firewall you don't need to hear about it again.

- You can add your most used bookmarks to Opera's start page.

- Opera 9.5 beta on the PC is my new browser. Its the fastest thing yet. It finally does everything my Firefox did but mostly without having to add a dozen extensions, like I did with Firefox. And now I synchronize my desktop Opera with Mini, so I can manipulate Mini's bookmarks from my PC. This is a big time saver!

I have tried to install opera mini on my Curve and the site indicates that it does not recognize it.I'm unsure if its just me being a BB newbie or just a matter of opera catching up. It appears that some savvy BB users have or know of a work around. Any help is extremely appreciated.

Default Opera Mini hmmm...

Ok, I've use the builtin browser for the last 3 BB's I've had so I have some preconcieved notions and habits.
Due to the overwhelming opinions about Opera Mini being a superior browser, I decided to give it a try and see what I am missing. So far, I am unimpressed.

First of all, I couldn't install OTA for the 8310. Seems the page for the 8300 Series doesn't recognize the 8310 and I had to d/l the generic version. If there's a SPECIFIC 8310 that will work better, wish I could figure out how to get it. I did d/l one, but had to do it via PC and DM. When I go to install it, it says it doesn't recogize any BB apps. /shrug. I was able to d/l the generic one.

I unchecked "Mobile View" and selected all 3 options under "Appearance" like an above poster suggested.

Im trying to learn the shortcuts. I really am. Everyone says to learn them as it makes it much faster.

So far, my biggest complaint, is that you have to click the trackball for EVERYTHING! Case in point. To login to Hotmail, I have to mouse over to the username box, then click the track ball and then enter my text and then click the trackball AGAIN, slect Ok and then move to the next field.

That's just for ONE data entry field. When I was using the BB browser, all I had to do was to highlight the box and start typing immediately. No multiple levels of accepting what I was entering and all that crap.

Also, I have to go to the Menu for everything. I realize this may be because I am not that used to the shortcuts, but for crying out loud, I should not have to pick a menu option for EVERYTHING I want to do.

I will continue to try the OM, but so far, I'm not impressed. I still think the BB browser is still faster. I mean its nice in that it shows a true view of a site, but rarely do I ever need to see the REAL image of a site as long as the links I need are there. I really couldn't care less if this art work is lined up with that element and what not. As long as I have the gist of the site, I really don't care about the aesthetics.

Just my 2 cents, but I think the BB browser is still alot better in alot of things.

I have OM installed to my phone, but don't care for it as much as I do the browser of the phone. With my previous bb (8703e) I loved the OM browser, but with my new 8310, not so much. If anything I would blame on having to adjust between the difference in navigation for the quickest response.

The only true benefit I have found with OM is the view of the pages themselves. Other than that its one down on the bb browser.

Peace

I truly do not all the interest in opera mini. Whether it be ver. 3 or 4, both of which I've used, I find the BB browser far better. Just my oppinion however.

Default Another thing about OM...

It actually connects to the Inet from within my corporate network since we have a BES server. The builtin browser connects from outside our network. This is an important distinction for me as sometimes I need to test things from OUTSIDE my network to inside.

I am trying Opera Mini...I really am. I adjusted my settings as per AJM's list. As a test I am looking at the New York Times, and don't like what I see. Opera shows me an exact image of the Times front page, and I have to zoom in to read anything. The BB browser presents the Times stories as a list, much easier to access. If this is an indication of Opera's MO, I don't like it.
