Default gmail IMAP 2way sync possible?

Please Login to Remove!

hello blackberry friends. i love my phone, but i'm still trying to get it to work in a way that makes me more productive.

Right now i have my email configured on the blackberry with IMAP. when messages are received, and read on the blackberry they are marked as read in the desktop mail client. perfect.

when they are deleted from my blackberry they are deleted from my client. perfect.

When I read and delete a message on my desktop client, the message stays on my blackberry as unread. WTFMATE.

to my knowledge, RIM doesn't support 2way imap sync for blackberries.

they however do support it with yahoo??

go figure.

does anyone else have any more info on this? namely gmail imap 2way sync?

People have stated that after a few hours, the messages deleted in your email client will be updated on your blackberry phone. true?

I have a few messages that i've deleted from the gmail web client that have been sitting on my blackberry for hours unchanged.

edit: and yes, i'm using the true gmail IMAP server, not the auto-configured junk that autoenables POP.

it actually has to do with how gmail has the IMAP set up. It is whats called an idle imap which is also why you dont get a gmail icon like you do the yahoo mail icon.

edit: this is what i've found Gmail supports IMAP IDLE - Robert Chien's Blog

so does it or does it not support imap idle?

i understand. so will my messages be updated EVENTUALLY? or am i left to manually remove the messages from my bb after reading them on my computer?

So are all the people that reported slow/eventual 2way gmail sync on crack?

Right but you mentioned that gmail doesn't support the idle function which plays a factor in this behavior. In the event that gmail actually does support it (true) then where else would the problem lie aside from BIS?

google is idle imap, that is the issue. if they go to true IMAP you will have two way sync, or should

Its not just the Imap-Idle feature that is required. The IMAP server must also support concurrent connections - meaning more than one idle connection. RIM would have to support this as well (it did for a few days in mid-2007 but had problems with servers that did not support it).

I must be on crack without knowing it! When I delete from the gmail Web client, the messages eventually disappear from my BB.

are you using gmail IMAP or the automatic BIS setup option?

also, do you have "Synchronize deleted items between this mailbox and my device." checked on the BIS?

do you have the application installed? or perhaps your messages are auto deleting because of your message settings on your device?

Idle imap isn't a type of imap, it is a feature or function that is very desireable for imap. It allows your client to idle on the server waiting to pull new message headers as they arrive. Let's stop the misinformation here

you are correct, i misspoke. the IDLE protocol is necessary for full push email, but does not inherintly dictate full two way syncronization. Correct me if i am wrong (i also want to get this straight) but there is another protocol needed for full two way sync, that yahoo supports and Google does not.

The fact that my desktop client supports full imap sync with gmail is enough to filter the possible problems to rim alone

edited finally: i got all confused, you are right about the idle being necessary for push like fuctionality, but i'm not so sure it requires something else.

if it does require something else, it is certainly not on google's end since it works with desktop clients... is that sensible?

I've been trying to figure this out too.

But I don't think Yahoo offers "FULL" 2-way sync.
Read and unread works perfect from web to BB. But when I delete an email from the web, it still stays on my BB.

I setup my gmail account with the imap.gmail.com server and read msgs on the web are not marked read on my BB.

If you are talking about Yahoo, I disagree. When I delete a message from the web intreface its gone from my blackberry as well.

Yea I must second that, I created myself a yahoo account just to test the IMAP BlackBerry feature and it works amazingly.... Unfortunately I have been using Gmail for years so I will never switch (unless Gmail goes down of course) but I do have faith that one day Google with have the sync capabilities that Yahoo, after today they released the fact that they now support Gmail IMAP on Windows Mobile, so all in due time I suppose.

Correct my if I am wrong. But I don't think BIS uses either POP or IMAP by default (you can manually set this up if you need to). But if you use the auto setup for Gmail or Yahoo, BIS uses some other method(special blackberry sauce) to have your mail pushed to your device. From everything that I know and have read on these forums. Yahoo supports Full 2-way sync. I use Yahoo. If I delete/read it on my blackberry it shows as deleted or read on my web account. If I delete/read on the web, it is reflected appropriately on my blackberry. I think Gmail is only one-way sync. With 2way sync to be introduced in the next BIS version??

My GMAIL eventually updates to my Blackberry. On average it takes about 5 hours for changes made via web to update on the BB. If I archive an email it will delete from my device. If I read an email it will be marked as read on my device. Like I said though, it takes about 5 hours.
