Default Re-use 5 BES CAL's on another server

Please Login to Remove!

Hi there, I would like to rebuild the BES server that we currently use on another box (Current one is a bit ropey)

Can I 'de-register' the 5 CAL license currently on the server so that it can be re-used on the new box? I assume just taking a note of the license won't work or there would be pirated BES keys all over the place.

Thanks for your help!

Dan

I'm not licensing expert ... however to stay compliant with your license agreement, simply remove the CALs from the BlackBerry Configuration Database.

While this is a procedure to add a CAL, the same screens are used to remove a CAL: KB10112 - How to add a new client access license authentication key

That is how you "de-register" a CAL.

Thanks for the howto link unfortunately as the BES only has 1x 5 license CAL pack registered I can't remove it as then the BES would be license-less.

I've googled around a lot and can't seem to find anything on this specific issue - I just want to make sure when I go to rebuild the BES it doesn't give me an error message saying that the CAL's I'm trying to register are already in use on another BES installatiion etc.

Also to clarify for legal reasons the old server will be off, wiped and dead - the BES and associated licenses will only ever be used on 1 piece of hardware.

It won't give you any notification.

Then from a legal perspective it looks like you're good.

OK so should I just be all good to take a note of the license key for the CAL's and then re-build the server on the new box using the original key and It'll all be good?

I would have thought BES CAL's would activate like Windows so RIM could avoid piracy?

i believe the only issue there is with regards to online checking (adnd being blocked remotly) is if you tried to use the same srp key on two bes servers at once.

correct. SRPs "register" when they connect.

In this scenario he would not have to buy a new SRP.

Yes, SRP's are things your purchase. They are a license key for a server to connect to RIMs infrastructure.

in his scenario he'll stop the services on server 1 and will install on server 2 using the same SRP.

...along with migrating the database (if it's not remote), etc. You'll want to perform what RIM refers to as the 'knife-edge cutover'. It is very simple, provides zero downtime if done right, and it very efficient.

KB10278 - How to perform a knife-edge cutover for BES 4.0 and 4.1 (Exchange) - Port3101.org : Your BES Connection
