Guys,

I have a 9800 torch for almost 1 year and the battery started to drain lately very fast (it only last about 5 hours sometimes with almost no use).

I changed the battery & the charger and the problem continues.
Also the back of the phone down from the battery becomes so hot sometimes.

Some days, the battery lasted for 12 hours ( 2 or three days only and the problem happens when charged again).

I know all the tips for saving the battery's charge that I usually turn of wifi and bluetooth and the brightness of the display is 10. Also there is no running apps.

Have you allowed the battery to run down below 20% more than a few times? Lithium batteries do not like to be less than 20% and getting below that level more than 3 or 4 times can damage the battery. Sounds to me like that is your problem.

Buy an OEM battery from your carrier and see if that fixes the problem. Don't get a cheap knock-off however.

(1) Just on the original battery, 1 year of good battery life may be reasonable given your usage, or not. If you routinely run the battery down all the way before recharing, the quicker you will wear out the battery. If you let it get hot, say leaving in a hot vehicle, likewise.

(2) Given the situation with the second battery, it would seem there is less reason to think battery #1 was just worn out. However, is the second battery a genuine BlackBerry battery? Did you get it from a reputable source? Have you been able to try it (as well as battery #1) in another BlackBerry?

(3) Are you sure nothing besides the four or five core apps is running? Do you have anything set to run in the background, anything that updates frequently? I would check every app and look at the settings.... Just because you don't see an app in the switch applications screen doesn't necessarily mean anything.

(4) The device surface can get warm to the touch sometimes, depending. But only warm. If it is hot to the degree that you find it painful to hold, I would say there is definitely a problem with either the device or the battery.

Actually the new one is OEM battery, and I tried my battery into another blackberry and it worked perfect!

I tried my #1 battery into another blackberry and it worked perfect and the new one is 100% original.

I opened settings and made sure that no other apps are running and using the processor.

Also for the warmness, the point is it is always related to the problem, I mean that the phone's back becomes hot when the battery drains so fast!

You could try a security wipe, select to delete all third-party/user-installed apps, and also make sure yourself that there are no add-on apps installed. Then, before you do anything but reactivate your Blackberry on the network, test and see what happens.

You might also go so far as to reinstall the OS, and that way be sure you have a clean OS install to test with. Then test the battery before adding your apps and such.

It could be a hardware problem; that will be the conclusion if you rule out software.

Also, I don't know if a microSD card going bad could cause a huge power drain. Seems unlikely to me -- especially not so much as to cause the battery to get so warm -- but I don't know. I really doubt it, but at any rate, it won't hurt to remove the card as a test.

Yea I'll try it .. Actually it is not the battery that goes warm, it is the surface below the battery.

Interesting. In my experience when there is a heavy demand for power -- in my experience it has happened when running a navigation app with tracking turned on -- it is the battery that gets warm, and in turn warms the back of the BlackBerry.

It doesn't make sense to me that there would be a big hit on battery life and you would feel a warm spot on the device without the battery also being warm. Weird.

My money is on some sort of hardware failure. But you need to rule out software.

Ladies and Gents, please keep in mind that the cpu sits behind the battery. Half the heat created by high discharge of the battery is generated by the cpu. I know about killing batteries, if I get 4 hours out of my 9800 I'm out dancing in the streets. (And no, the battery is not bad, its my usage that kills em)

It's obviously a software problem guys, I did update the os and a 507 error happened so it deleted all the apps with the new update and then the battery is still up for 11 hours till now and 75% remaining .. Thank you guys .. you rock )
