There is a tremendous advantage of 3G for calls... primarily the ability to receive IMs, receive SMS, and Sync Calendars while on a call. For me personally this was a huge feature when I looked at buying a Bold.

Also, call quality has been reportedly better when on 3G.

I agree that there are clear call advantages of the Bold connected in 3G.
My guess is that, at least around Toronto, the 'failed call' problem may well be related to call density and inadequate network. I've noticed sitting in the same place in downtown with the 5 bars 3G showing, that in the late afternoon calls fail regularly, whereas earlier in the day they connect nearly all the time. I've only had the Bold for a couple weeks but I only very rarely had this type of problem with Telus, but now it happens nearly every day with Rogers.

Ok may be I am wrong here but this whole 2G vs. 3G is for data only, how does it have any connection to voice which still uses good 'ole GSM? I mean you can switch off data completely and still have call issues can you not?

Hmm, that's true when your provider also upgraded their Blackberry system to support 3G BlackBerry. If not, there's really no advantages.

Just some opinion.

I have multiple blackberrys and when on a call I do not receive any data (ie. chats, emails, sms, etc.) on the 8310 and 8700c. On the 9000, I receive all of the above while on a call, and also receive a faint jingle in the call audio to let me know.

Yes, you need to have 3G service in your location, and have it enabled on the phone to obviously take advantage of 3G.
